Discover summer bounty at farmers markets

- Shoppers navigate booths on the opening day of the Pendleton Farmers Market on Main Street in downtown Pendleton Friday, May 7, 2021.
Summer is in full swing and that means gardens and orchards are bursting with bumper crops.
Fresh fruit and vegetables are just part of what you’ll find at farmers markets across Eastern Oregon.
The John Day Farmers Market, for example, offers produce, baked goods, flowers, plants and hand-crafted items.
“We have amazing talent here,” said Stephanie LeQuieu, market manager since 2019.
She said the market is still getting new vendors every week.
In Wallowa County, the Saturday market in Joseph boasts produce, jewelry, soap, goat and bison meat, iron work, art, kid vendors and more. This market is also bringing back live music and fundraising events that went on hiatus during COVID-19 restrictions. The market’s manager, Kimi Starner, said the annual pie sale fundraiser is Aug. 14 and the board of directors are hoping to bring back the Harvest Dinner, a sold-out affair in 2018 and 2019.
Each market is unique based on its area, and sometimes you’ll see the same vendors in different towns thanks to the varying days.
We’ve compiled a list of farmers markets along with the locations, days of operation and contact information to learn more or inquire about becoming a vendor.
Most of the markets continue into October. Check out one or make it a goal to visit all of them. You never know what you might find.
