PENDLETON — Hundreds of hot rods will descend on Pendleton next week for the Hotrod-a-Rama.
Termed “The Resurrection,” the classic car event is reviving after a decade-long hiatus in a brand-new location. According to Hotrod-a-Rama’s Facebook page, more than 450 cars are currently signed up
Dale Seaholm of Tucson, Arizona, is organizing the four-day event. Classic cars, he said, are a family tradition.
“My dad got me started when I was 18 years old,” Seaholm said. “He was an old-time hot-rodder from the 1950s who drove the original Ford hot rods.”
Pre-registered vehicles are invited to attend a “Meat & Greet” at the Pendleton Convention Center Thursday, July 29, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. (registration will not be facilitated during that time). Vendors at the convention center will be slinging Western-style barbecue before the hot rods roll out to the Milton-Freewater Drive-In later in the afternoon.
“We have people coming all the way from San Diego, Arizona, Montana, Pennsylvania. We are hoping the Canadian border opens so folks who are registered from Canada can make it,” Seaholm said.
Spectators can join the hot rods at the Milton-Freewater Drive-In Thursday evening where walk-ins are $1. Organizers encourage those who aren’t registered with the show to bring blankets or lawn chairs and enjoy a classic film surrounded by classic cars. Parking for non-registered cars will be across the highway. DJ Late Night Johnny from Seattle will be spinning tunes before the feature film begins.
Hotrod-a-Rama will host a swap meet Friday and Saturday, July 30 and 31, at the Pendleton Convention Center where local vendors and registered cars will be hawking their wares. The swap meet runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day.
The main event is downtown where, starting at 9 a.m. Friday and Saturday, hot rods of all makes and models will line multiple parking lots starting at 108 SW Frazer Ave. Friday’s show goes to 5 p.m with music provided by DJ Late Night Johnny. Saturday, live bands are slated to start around 2 p.m. and continue late into the night.
On Friday, July 30, from 6 p.m. to close, those with registered cars in the show are invited to an old-fashioned ice cream social at Oregon Grain Growers Distillery and Eats for craft cocktails and wood-fired pizzas.
Registered participants will close out the event Sunday, Aug. 1, with Bloody Marys and breakfast at Oregon Grain Growers from 9 a.m. to noon.
