BAKER CITY — Actor’s Studio Inc. is planning an evening of music and a movie to benefit the Kiwanis Club of Baker City, and specifically the cancer program at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland.

Gates open at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, July 29, at The Ison House Bed and Brew, 1790 Washington Ave. The entertainment begins at 7 p.m. with music by KC Kunkle and Friends, followed by a screening of “La Rue’s Return.”

Tickets are $15. Food and drink will be available to purchase. Buy tickets at Random Resales & Riches, 2450 Cherry St., or online at www.actorsstudioinc.com.

The connection to Doernbecher is Isabella Evans, who plays the swamp crone in “La Rue’s Return.” Evans, now going into her senior year at Eastern Oregon University, was treated at Doernbecher when she was diagnosed with T-cell leukemia in 2011.

“La Rue’s Return” was filmed onsite at The Ison House earlier this year (which explains the use of face shields during filming). DVDs, produced by Gary Hutton, were released for sale in May. These are still available to purchase for $15 at www.actorsstudioinc.com.

“La Rue’s Return” was written by Edward Thorpe and Scott Cherney. The writers granted permission for Actor’s Studio to tweak the play a bit — one character was added, as well as some content related to the pandemic.

The storyline follows the return of Jacques La Rue, a nefarious criminal who just got out of prison. He soon returns to the bar owned by Polly Montclair, who is still recovering after being poisoned by La Rue. When La Rue discovers that Polly is about to inherit money and the deed for land in Oregon, he hatches a plan to convince innocent maid Mimi to steal the money.

The cast includes Doug Evans, Kendall Cikanek, John Murray, Jen Cikanek, Twila Lavery, Karsten Cikanek, Isabella Evans and Jarren Cikanek.
