Stanfield installs new disc golf course

STANFIELD — For a new place to rattle some chains, check out the new disc golf course at Bard Park in Stanfield. The baskets are in and the city of Stanfield is finishing up with the installation of tee markers on the nine-hole course. It includes one par 4 and the rest of the holes are par 3.

The park is adjacent to Highway 395 as you drive through town. Players are invited to come enjoy a round of disc golf. There is no fee to play. For a map of the course layout, visit https://cityofstanfield.com or search www.facebook.com/stanfieldparksandrec.

Wednesdays in the Park returns with free music in July

PENDLETON — Wednesdays in the Park has returned with free concerts in July at Pendleton’s Roy Raley Park. Co-organized by the Pendleton Parks and Recreation Department and concert-booking company Sounds Like Entertainment, the Wednesday concerts begin at 6 p.m.

The series will feature Grateful, a Grateful Dead tribute band, on July 21, and Hillfolk Noir, a folk, bluegrass and punk band that describes its style as “junkerdash,” on July 28.

As in years past, each concert also will include a food vendor area and a beer and wine garden.

Cruise Control revs up Music in the Park

IRRIGON — A hard-drivin’ rock ’n’ roll sound along with softer melodies are featured as Cruise Control gets set to perform at Music in the Park in Irrigon. The Tri-Cities band will crank out tunes from the 1950s through the 1980s Monday, July 26, at 7 p.m. at Irrigon Marina Park, 430 NE Eighth St. There is no admission charge.

Audience members are invited to to tap their toes, dance or just sing along. From time to time, the band provides an open mic for people in the audience to display their talents or fulfill their dream of singing with a rock band. Also, the band is very versatile and may take requests from the eras they cover.

People are encouraged to bring a blanket or lawn chair and a picnic and beverages to enjoy while listening to the music on the shores of the Columbia River.

Nez Perce artists reflect on their work at the Josephy Center

JOSEPH — There will be a small celebration Friday, July 23, at 7 p.m. at the Josephy Center on Main Street in Joseph with special guests Nez Perce artists Kellen Trenal and Phil Cash Cash, writer Beth Piatote and other Nez Perce writers and speakers who will read and reflect on their own work as it relates to maps, words and images of Josephy’s current exhibit, “Nez Perce Treaties and Reservations, 1855-Present.” There is no charge for this event, although donations are appreciated, and there will be books and art work for sale.

Catch weekly live music in Enterprise and La Grande

ENTERPRISE, LA GRANDE — For the 16th consecutive summer, the Music Alliance is putting on the Courthouse Concert Series at the gazebo on the lawn of the Wallowa County Courthouse, in Enterprise, every Thursday at 5:30 p.m. July 22’s concert features Brass Fire, and Hillfolk Noir takes the stage July 29.

In La Grande, the 2021 Riverside Concert Series is underway, offering live music on Thursdays at Riverside Park. The free weekly event is sponsored by the La Grande Arts Commission. July 22, Elwood Music is slated to perform, followed by Sam Ragsdale July 29.

Friday night means an outdoor movie at Community Park

PENDLETON — Pendleton Parks and Recreation is sponsoring Movies in the Park on Fridays through Aug. 20. The movie starts at dusk at Community Park. The evening includes pre-movie activities such as kickball, corn hole, flag football and a concession stand.

HQ hosts live music, weekly ‘open stage’

LA GRANDE — A lineup of live music at HQ, 112 Depot St., La Grande, is again beginning to fill out. Saturday, July 24, brings Dead Lee, the Portland-based duo of Brian Koch (current and founding member of Blitzen Trapper) and singer-songwriter Kara Harris. Together they will share their mutual love of the darker folk and country traditions. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the music begins at 8 p.m. Admission is $10 at the door. Jeff Grammer is the opening act. Slated to play in August are Sun Blood Stories, Shivas, Nut Rut and Nogero.

Also, the venue is hosting a weekly “open stage” at 6 p.m. on Thursdays, opening its stage “for a night of impromptu music acts, combos, chit-chat, hubbub and hodiddles,” according to www.lagrandehq.com. The bar will be open and there’s no cover charge.

Bandits rumored to target Saturday’s excursion train

ELGIN — The Eagle Cap Excursion Train, which offers round-trip scenic rides departing from the Elgin Depot, will run Saturday, July 24, despite rumors that the sneaky Gold Rush Bandits are planning their next heist. Those who are brave enough to take the risk will be served a box lunch aboard the train, which leaves at 10 a.m. and returns around 2 p.m.

Fares are $70 for ages 17-59, $65 for ages 60 and older, $35 for ages 3-16, and free for younger than three with a paying adult. Tickets are limited. Make reservations at www.eaglecaptrainrides.com or call the depot agent at 541-437-3652.

Brain Mandella performs in Side A-lley

LA GRANDE — Brian Mandella will play Friday, July 30, for the next Side A-lley concert — in the back courtyard of Side A Brewing, 1219 Washington Ave. The show starts at 7 p.m., and there isn’t a cover charge. According to Side A’s Facebook page, Mandella is “an incredibly talented folks and blues musician and songwriter out of Pilot Rock … with a classic country sound and the ability to spin any song verse into pure poetry.”

Get ready to party with Blue Tattoo

UMATILLA — People are invited to make plans to Party in the Pasture with Blue Tattoo, a Hermiston-area rock ’n’ roll band, Saturday, July 31, from 3-10 p.m. at Camp Freedom, just south of Power City on South Highway 395 near Hermiston.

The free event is brought to you by Bonney’s Ag Sales and the Umatilla Chamber of Commerce, who teamed up to host a celebration of summer and lifting of COVID-19 restrictions. The Bridge Bistro & Brews is hosting the beer garden, and there will be food trucks on hand to help people re-fuel.

Sumpter Valley Railroad plans full runs

SUMPTER — The steam-powered Sumpter Valley Railroad will run two trains on Saturday and Sunday, July 31 and Aug. 1. Trains depart McEwen Depot at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. for round trips to Sumpter. Cost is $25 adults, $22 seniors/military, $15 ages 3-17. Purchase tickets in advance at www.sumptervalleyrailroad.org.

EO Beer Festival VIP passes on sale now

LA GRANDE — The 2021 Eastern Oregon Beer Festival will be held Saturday, Aug. 14, at the Union County Fairgrounds, La Grande. General admission passes are $25 pre-sale or $30 at the gate. A limited number of VIP passes are available for $50 and include a VIP-only event Aug. 13 and early entry to Saturday’s festival. Free open jam sessions held twice a month

LA GRANDE — Direct Music Source, 1206 Adams Ave., La Grande, is hosting a free open jam session on the first and third Saturdays of each month. All are welcome to play, sing or just listen, from 4-6 p.m. The next gatherings are Aug. 7 and Aug. 21.

Randy Rogers Band to headline Wheatstock Music Festival

HELIX — Tickets are now on sale for the 13th-annual Wheatstock Music Festival. The Randy Rogers Band will headline the Saturday, Aug. 21, event at Quantum 9 Arena in Helix.

The festival lineup includes Tylor and the Trainrobbers, Wanderlost, Norman Baker and the Backroads, Great American Trainwreck and Hillfolk Noir.

In addition to music from 2:30-11 p.m., the festival offers free camping, food vendors, a beer garden and bouncy castles for the kids.

General admission is $40. VIP passes are $149 and include a general admission ticket, a limited backstage pass an- an event T-shirt and poster. Tickets and VIP passes can be purchased at www.wheatstock.org. All seating is in a grassy area; festival goers are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs.

‘The Emperor’s New Clothes’ theater camp is July 26-31

BAKER CITY — Missoula Children’s Theater will arrive in Baker City Monday, July 26, to audition local children for “The Emperor’s New Clothes.” Youth from grades 1-12 are welcome to participate in this program, which is brought to town by Crossroads Carnegie Art Center.

Cost is $40 for Crossroads members, or $60 for nonmembers. After auditions, children rehearse all week and end the camp with two performances: 6 p.m. July 30 and 3 p.m. July 31. (The public is welcome to attend; admission is $5.) For information or to register, call Crossroads at 541-523-5369.

Learn the art of creative bookmaking

BAKER CITY — Ginger Rembold will lead a class on creative bookmaking Thursday, July 29, from 6-8 p.m. at Crossroads Carnegie Art Center, 2020 Auburn Ave., Baker City.

Participants will create three different small journal-size books using origami techniques. These make great memory books for special occasions, birthday cards, quote collections, mini photo albums and more.
