JOHN DAY — We all know 2020 was a long year.
It was a quiet one, too, in John Day, without the crunching fenders and screaming spectators of the annual Whiskey Gulch Gang Demolition Derby.
Rejoice, fans, the derby is back!
Once again, exhaust pipes will be busting, mud flying and oil leaking on Saturday, July 24, at the John Day Auto Parts Arena at the Grant County Fairgrounds. Gates open at 6 p.m., with the action set to start roaring at 7 p.m.
This will be the 31st year for the family-friendly event, which draws participants and bystanders from well outside Grant County.
The derby car entry fee is $50 for one driver and pit crew member; additional pit passes are $30. Car inspections will be at 3 p.m.
Those who crash will be vying for cash. Top money awards include $2,000 for first place, $1,000 for second, $500 for third, and several prizes in other categories.
Admission is $12 for adults, $10 for ages 7-12, and children 6 and younger get in free. Presale tickets are $2 less and available at Les Schwab, Ace Hardware and Tru Value Hardware, all in John Day, as well as at the fair office, 411 NW. Bridge St.
