The photography exhibit opens Friday, July 30, with a reception starting at 7 p.m. The reception includes an artists’ Q&A and an exhibit walkthrough. Food and drinks will be served, and the art will be for sale. The exhibit ends Sept. 10.
McEwan, a nature photographer, approached the Josephy Center two years ago with an idea for this exhibit.
“We live in a world where we document, through photography, our instances in time,” he said. “To hold those photographs is to hold the memories in our lives.”

His aim as an artist is to capture the beauty of these memories.
“I seek to communicate a sense of place through hours, days, sometimes years of personal experience in a location,” McEwan said. He endeavors “to see the familiar in new and intriguing ways, seeing patterns and connections across time, space and experience.”
“Nature travel, and intentional camera movement techniques are truly inspiring for me as a photographer. My intent is to capture the essence of a place or an emotion, as I experience it,” said co-exhibitor Buttolph.
She shares McEwan’s idea that “each photograph preserves a unique portrayal of place and time.”
“Seeing the world through a lens simplifies one’s view, and deepens perception of a visual subject,” Buttolph said. “It allows me to appreciate and reveal the magic that is present, a gift for taking the time to see.”
The photographs will be for sale online and at the exhibit. A catalog also will be for sale for $15.
After the opening reception, view the exhibit at the Josephy Center, 403 N. Main St., Joseph, Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. In addition to the in-person display, a slide show of the exhibit will be available on the Josephy Center’s website, www.josephy.org.
“Instance in Time” is supported by the Ford Family Visual Arts, Oregon Community Foundation, Ann Werner and the patronage of the community.
