Crashing into August

- The Haines Stampede Demolition Derby is Saturday, Aug. 3, at the Haines Stampede Rodeo arena.
HAINES — The (intentional) devastation of the demolition derby is back to raise money for the Haines Stampede Rodeo.
“It should be a really good show this year,” said Cody McCue, who organizes the event. “We have cars coming from Walla Walla all the way to the Nevada border.”
The annual demolition derby happens Saturday, Aug. 7, at the rodeo arena in Haines. Gates open at 4 p.m. There is a mandatory drivers meeting at 5 p.m. The derby begins at 6 p.m.
Admission for spectators is $15 adults, $10 for seniors and members of the military, and $5 for ages 5-12. Entry is free for youth younger than 5.
There are several classes for participants: welded is the open class, while “chain and bang” is for entry level competitors. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three in each category, and the car that traveled the farthest gets a refund on the entry fee.
Entry is $50 for car and driver, plus one pit pass. Drivers must be 16 years or older.
Barrel racing
This year’s halftime show is barrel racing — but on wheels instead of horses.
“They have to do it on ATVs — no animals,” McCue said.
There will be a category for youth (ages 7-15; waiver/release from a legal guardian is required), and for adults (age 16 and older; waiver/release is required for ages 16-17). Long sleeves, pants, closed-toe shoes and a full-face helmet are required.
Entry for barrel racing is $10.
Halftime also includes a cowhide race.
