BAKER CITY — Rob Scheps says his upcoming concert at Churchill School is a special one.

It’s not often, you see, that a band gets to perform their music for an audience on the very same stage they recorded an album.

“It’s in the same room and the same space,” Scheps said.

Rob Scheps and the TBA Band recorded an album over Labor Day weekend in 2020. That album was officially released in February 2021, and now he’s returning to that same stage to play live.

The show is Saturday, Sept. 11, at Churchill School, 3451 Broadway St. (enter through the 16th Street parking lot). Doors open at 6 p.m., and the show starts at 6:45 p.m. Tickets are $8 in advance or $10 at the door. For more details and tickets, visit www.churchillbaker.com.

The album — “Live at the Churchill School” — features a cover photo of Churchill’s steeple against a sunset sky, captured by Brian Vegter (who owns Churchill with his wife, Corrine). Scheps was joined on the record by Matt Cooper on piano, Laurent Nickel on acoustic and electric bass, and Michael Rodenkirch on drums. Luke McKern was a guest musician on guitar.

Not all those musicians were available for the Sept. 11 show. Scheps will be joined on stage by Cooper, who just retired after a 30-year teaching career at Eastern Oregon University, along with Portland musicians Ross Garlow on acoustic bass and George Colligan on drums.

Scheps plays saxophone and flute. In 35 years of playing, he’s produced numerous albums, but he said none are quite like this one.

“This is the first time I’ve put out a CD where all the compositions are my own,” he said.

He’s written 23 original compositions in the past two years, and eight of those are on “Live at the Churchill School.” He describes the album as “homegrown, Oregon jazz” — it was recorded in Oregon, and all the musicians live in Oregon.

Scheps said his live shows were nearly nonexistent during the pandemic.

“I turned my eye to more composing and more recording,” he said.
