LA GRANDE — Art Center East is more than a gallery or a place to shop before the holidays. The center’s programs allow you to make art within its walls or at home; provide platforms for sharing poetry and prose and a weekly exchange to share puzzles; and connect children with nature and science.

WATERCOLOR WORKSHOP: THE ZEBRA
Teaching artist Jan Clark leads a two-day watercolor workshop Sept. 25-26. Participants (age 15 and older) will learn blending techniques as they paint a fun, colorful and sunlit zebra. TAKE & MAKE ART KITS
The center’s Take & Make Art Kits are great for travel, outdoor activities, chillin’ by the AC or under a blanket on the couch. There are artist-designed kits for all ages, with new options added regularly at www.artcentereast.org/learn/classes/take-make-art-kits/.
POETRY POST
The Union County Poetry Post at Art Center East is a place for all to read, write or share a poem. Poems are shared on ACE’s social media along with a weekly prompt to spark creativity. (If you live outside of Union County and would like to add your poem to the collection, email it to info@artcentereast.org or mail it to ACE at P.O. Box 541, La Grande 97850.)
WRITING PROJECT
The ACE Writing Project hosts author readings and an open mic the third Wednesday of the month. Enjoy an evening of literary arts and learn about the talent hiding in our backyard. Writers of all experience levels and genres are welcome, and it is free to share and to listen.
PUZZLE EXCHANGE
Trade your puzzles for new ones on the third Saturday of the month from 1-2 p.m. There is a suggested donation of $5 per puzzle taken home or exchanged, all proceeds benefiting ACE.
DISCOVER AFTER SCHOOL
Discover After School is a free outdoor program for middle school students that brings together art, science and nature. A collaboration between Art Center East and the La Grande Parks and Recreation Department, the program begins Sept. 16 and will be offered from 3:30-5:30 p.m. on Thursdays through Oct. 21. Students will go on weekly field trips to Riverside Park and Pete’s Pond for activities such as sculpting, journaling and scientific explorations.
