There’s still a chance to ride a fall train

ELGIN, SUMPTER — Fall is making its way to winter, but tickets are still available for train rides aboard the Eagle Cap Excursion Train and Sumpter Valley Railroad.
The Eagle Cap train departs from the Elgin Depot. The SVRR leaves either from the McEwen Depot or Sumpter Depot, depending on the ride. Both organizations offer free rides to age 2 and younger with a paid adult.

For its remaining fall schedule, the Eagle Cap Excursion Train runs Oct. 23, Oct. 30 and Nov. 6.
All are the “Two Rivers” route that leaves from Elgin at 10 a.m. and follows the Grande Ronde and Wallowa rivers to where they join at Rondowa. The ride includes a boxed lunch. The train returns to Elgin about 1:30 p.m. Fares are $70 adults, $65 seniors age 60 and older, and $35 for ages 3-16. Riders younger than 3 are free.
On the Oct. 30 train, Halloween costumes are welcome and there will be a prize awarded for the funniest face mask and most creative face mask. (Face masks are required on the train and in the depot, except when eating and drinking.)

SVRR
The Sumpter Valley Railroad’s fall foliage trains will run Friday, Oct. 22, and Sunday, Oct. 24. On both days, trains depart from the McEwen Depot at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Fares are $25 adults, $22 seniors/military, and $15 for ages 3-17.
The fall photo train on Saturday, Oct. 23, is a full-day adventure starting with a continental breakfast and 6 a.m. before the 7 a.m. departure from the McEwan Depot. The round trip features multiple stops to capture scenic shots of the train and the changing colors. Cost is $150.
Two night trains are planned for Friday, Oct. 29, with rides leaving the Sumpter Depot at 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. Fares are $15 adults, $14 seniors/military, and $8 ages 3-17. This coincides with the “Haunted Dredge” experience at the Sumpter Valley Dredge from 7-9 p.m.
More short trains are planned for Saturday, Oct. 30, at 11 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. The Sumpter Depot will have a costume contest and Halloween treats. Fares are $15 adults, $14 seniors/military, and $8 ages 3-17.
In November, a Moonlight Train featuring wine and cheese is happening Friday, Nov. 19. Tickets are $55 for adults and $20 for kids (cheese samples only).
On Saturday, Nov. 20, a full steam train leaves the McEwen Depot at noon and riders can roast hot dogs and marshmallows at the Sumpter stop. Tickets are $25 adults, $22 seniors/military, $15 for ages 3-17, or $70 per family (two adults and two children).
