Scheps and Cooper present ‘Spring Jazz at the Vert’ May 14

PENDLETON — Rob Scheps and Matt Cooper will present “Spring Jazz at the Vert” on Saturday, May 14, 7 p.m. at the Vert Auditorium, 480 SW Dorion Ave.

BHS presents ‘SHOUT!’ the musical

BAKER CITY — Baker High School will present “SHOUT! The Mod Musical” at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 14, and 3 p.m. Sunday, May 15.

Admission is free but tickets are required. Donations will be accepted. Tickets are available at Crossroads Carnegie Art Center, Sweet Wife Baking and the front office at BHS.

“SHOUT!” in set in the 1960s when the hits included “Downtown,” “To Sir With Love,” “Son of a Preacher Man” and “Georgy Girl.” The performance is described as “an irresistible blend of foot-stomping songs, eye-popping fashions and psychedelic dancing that will make you want to throw your head back and shout!”

‘THE TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA’ RUNS MAY 13-14

PENDLETON — The Elgin Opera House brings Shakespeare to Pendleton with “The Two Gentlemen of Verona” at 7:30 p.m. May 13 and May 14 at the Bob Clapp Theatre on the campus of Blue Mountain Community College, 2411 NW Carden Ave. Tickets are $18 and can be purchased at elginoperahouse.com.

The cast features Abby Hale, Carly Elder, Chris Dennett, Christian Quinlin and a dog named Duke.

Ladd Marsh Bird Festival is a weekend for birdwatchers

LA GRANDE — The 2022 Ladd Marsh Bird Festival is set for May 13-15.

The weekend begins Friday, May 13, with a gathering at the Union County Senior Center, 1504 N. Albany St. From 6-8 p.m., visitors can register and receive a passport for the festival’s birding stations, as well as register for field trips and enjoy music and snacks.

Saturday and Sunday feature stations at the Ladd Marsh Wildlife Area, as well as scheduled field trips. Space is limited for the trips — register in advance at friendsofladdmarsh.org. A schedule and map of the stations can also be found on the website.

Enjoy an evening of jazz on May 13

LA GRANDE — The Grande Ronde Symphony’s Chamber and Small Ensemble Series (CASES) is returning to live, in-person concerts with the first in the series, featuring Rob Scheps and Matt Cooper in a show titled “Life Is a Lot Like Jazz!”

The concert will be begin at 7 p.m. Friday, May 13, in the Groth Recital Hall in Eastern Oregon University’s Loso Hall. Tickets are $10 for adults and $1 for students. Special family/group pricing is available. Season passes to CASES are $50. Purchase tickets at granderondesymphony.org or at the door.

Two shows, one concert at Churchill School

BAKER CITY — Bag of Hammers, featuring Luke McKern and Holly Sorensen, and Firefly Walter, hailing from Santa Fe, New Mexico, will play Friday, May 13, at Churchill School, 3451 Broadway St.

Doors open at 6 p.m. and the music starts at 6:45 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance at churchillbaker.com, or $15 at the door. Proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test is required. Admission is free for fully vaccinated youth age 15 and younger who attend with a ticket-holding adult.

ACE Writing Project set for May 18

LA GRANDE — The ACE Writing Project features Tashon Phoenix on Wednesday, May 18, 7 p.m. The Art Center East monthly literary event will be virtual — sign up at artcentereast.org/events/ace-writing-project/.

Formerly of Omaha, Nebraska, where they played defensive back for the Nebraska NiteHawks of the WNFC until their transition, Phoenix (they, them, theirs) is a non-binary Transmasculine Creative and Spoken Word Artist now living in Portland. They’ve been featured on the social audio app Clubhouse by Love & Lyrics as well as Mike Guinn Entertainment, and can be seen live at such local Portland venues as The Queens Head and Alberta Street Pub. Cornhole for Charity seeks participants

PENDLETON — The charity event Cornhole for a Cause is Thursday, May 19, 5 p.m. in the Happy Canyon Arena, 1601 Westgate. The event also features a silent auction, door prizes, a 50-50 drawing and a no-host bar.

Each team that enters will choose a charity to play for — the selected charities of the first, second and third place teams will receive a donation. In addition, winning teams will receive a prize package from local businesses.

BROTHERS OSBORNE TO HEADLINE FRONTIER DAYS AUG. 31

WALLA WALLA — Country music duo Brothers Osborne will headline the 2022 Walla Walla Fair & Frontier Days. Concert tickets, which include admission to the fair, range from $54 to $114.

The show is Aug. 31, 7 p.m., the opening day of the fair. With a theme of “Comin’ in Hot,” the fair runs through Sept. 4.

Described as a mix between Southern rock and outlaw country, Brothers Osborne is best known for their 2015 song “Stay a Little Longer.” It climbed into the top five on Billboard Hot Country Songs and Country Airplay charts.
