ELGIN, SUMPTER — A chance to see Eastern Oregon landscapes from the windows of a train continues this summer with the Eagle Cap Excursion Train and Sumpter Valley Railroad.
Here’s a look at the special events coming up with each organization.
Eagle Cap Excursion Train
Although some rides are selling out, there are still plenty of opportunities to hop aboard the Eagle Cap Excursion Train at the Elgin Depot for a ride along the Grande Ronde River. Reserve seats at www.eaglecaptrainrides.com or call 541-437-3652.
The Excursion Train takes a break in August due to wildfire risk, but now is the time to plan ahead for fall, when the train starts up on Sept. 3 with a train robbery by the High Country Outlaws. That train leaves Elgin at 10 a.m. and returns at 2 p.m. A boxed lunch is included. Cost is $75 adults, $70 seniors and $35 for ages 3-16.
Other rides are scheduled for September and October, which leads into the season for fall color in Eastern Oregon.
Sept. 10 and 17 are the Two Rivers excursion, which follows the Grande Ronde River to Rondowa and up the Wallowa River. The train leaves Elgin at 10 a.m. and returns by about 1:30 p.m. Cost is $75 adults, $70 seniors and $35 for ages 3-16.
A special Alpen Train is set for Sept. 21 in conjunction with Oregon’s Alpenfest, which happens in Joseph Sept. 29- Oct. 2. This train will feature Bavarian food, guests hosts in lederhosen and dirndl dresses and live accordion music. Cost is $80 adults, $75 seniors and $40 for ages 3-16.
The next train is also new — Squatch America is coming on board the Bigfoot Train on Oct. 1. Scot and Hannah Violette will bring their expertise about Sasquatch along on the ride, with Scot talking about his research and answering questions. This train follows the Two Rivers route. Fares are $75 adults, $70 seniors and $35 for ages 3-16.
A Two Rivers Bonus Ride is set for Oct. 8, and the season ends Oct. 22 with the Bounty Train, including a meal by Ten Depot Street featuring ingredients from local farms, gardens, orchards and ranches.
