The Great Sioux Uprising

PENDLETON — The city of Pendleton is rich with history, and part of that story is brought to life in the 1953 film “The Great Sioux Uprising.” The movie, which was filmed in Pendleton in 1952, will be screened Tuesday, Aug. 9, at 6 p.m. for Terrific Tuesday at Heritage Station Museum, thanks to the stories of museum board member Mary Jo Price. While working at the Rivoli Theatre in Pendleton, Price and other Rivoli staff members had frequent interactions with the film’s lead star, Jeff Chandler. Price’s stories sparked inspiration for the museum to feature the film as a Terrific Tuesday event. Price will be in attendance and has the honor of opening the film. “We specifically looked for movies that tied to stories locals have told us and were filmed here. There are a number of locals who were in both Jeff Chandler films shot in Eastern Oregon,” said Shannon Gruenhagen, Heritage Station marketing and tourism coordinator. Co-sponsoring the event along with Wheatland Insurance is the Rivoli Coalition, a nonprofit with the mission of restoring and elevating the historic Rivoli Theatre into a regional performing arts and cultural center. After receiving funding that is predicted to have the theater opening its doors by September, the Coalition stated, “These film screenings offer a glimpse into the Rivoli’s past as we prepare for its future.” “Events like this not only help to share the past but often lead to visitors sharing their memories which helps us piece together timelines and details of events,” Gruenhagen said. The screening will take place at Heritage Station, 108 SW Frazer Ave. For more information, visit heritagestationmuseum.org or on Facebook. The museum is a project of the Umatilla County Historical Society.
