BAKER CITY — Pat Brougham doesn’t set out with a plan when she makes her colorful crib-sized quilts.
Instead, her projects start with a trip to the fabric store where she stocks up on “minky” fabric.
“It’s super soft and comes in lots of colors,” she said.
Once she has the fabric, she starts designing a character — a cow, a sheep or a friendly alien.
She’s sewed for many years, and in the past sold her quilts at craft shows as a side business.
Although she doesn’t sell them anymore, Brougham still likes to make the quilts — and this month, she found a good cause to support with her creative endeavor.
Brougham volunteers at the Baker Relief Nursery, which offers support for expecting parents and families with children ages 0 to 5.
The center’s first fundraiser, “Storybook Quilts” featuring Brougham’s quilts paired with a children’s book, is happening now. The quilts are being hosted by The Cheese Fairy, 1937 Main St., through Sept. 18.
Bidding is through an online auction, which closes at noon on Sunday, Sept. 18. The auction link is: https://brn.betterworld.org/auctions/storybook-quilts.
If you want to see the quilts, stop by The Cheese Fairy seven days a week. A QR code accompanying each quilt can be scanned for quick access to the auction site.
This is the nursery’s first fundraiser since it was certified in May 2021, although there have been several diaper drives to fill the center’s diaper bank (another drive is planned for this fall).

Baker Relief Nursery was certified in May 2021. It is located at 1925 16th St., and now serves 14 families.
It has two classrooms — one for infants and one for toddlers.
The nursery includes home visits, and helps connect families to community resources.
The center also includes a diaper bank, food bank, and baby clothing bank — all stocked with donated items.
Volunteers are needed, as well as substitute volunteers. For more information, visit bakerreliefnursery.org, email info@bakerreliefnursery.org or call 541-239-5054.
