Music teacher rocks musical performance

ELGIN — The plot of “School of Rock” follows Dewey Finn, a rocker who takes the role of a teacher. In the Elgin Opera House performances, a teacher is playing the role of a rock musician.

In high school and college, Tucker Murphey played gigs with multiple rock bands before becoming a teacher.

“School of Rock is my story. Dewey Finn is me — but I have a teaching degree. I have a license, I want to make that clear,” Murphey said with a laugh.

Murphey is the band and choir teacher at Elgin High School. This fall, he is a teacher by day and a rocker by night, serving in not one or two but three roles in “School of Rock.”

In the show, the audience can catch sight of Murphey as the drummer for No Vacancy, the on-stage pit band. Off stage, Murphey is also the production’s music director. Being on stage and serving as the music director also has its own challenges.

“Once rehearsals really kick in, you don’t get the bird’s eye view because you’re focused on your part of the show. That makes it harder to get the bigger picture of what’s going on and make corrections,” he said. “It’s fun, though.”

The music is an integral part of any on-stage musical, and “School of Rock” is no exception. The approach to music is, however, a little different.

“I think of it is as going to a rock concert and a play breaking out,” Murphey said. “There’s still the musical theater aspect, the score and the harmonies, but this is rock and roll.”

The stage production of “School of Rock” includes the music from the Hollywood film as well as additional pieces by Andrew Lloyd Weber. Murphey said the show takes a tremendous amount of dedication from the musicians because almost all of the music is being performed live by either No Vacancy or the four student members of the School of Rock band. One of those is Murphey’s 11-year-old son, Ely, who was cast as guitar player Zack Moonyham.

“The best part is watching my son play guitar and act for the first time. This is the first time he’s acting and singing for a musical,” Murphey said.

Murphey said that third role — that of parent — has really opened his eyes to the time children and parents dedicate to productions.

Being a parent may also influence Murphey’s take on the music in “School of Rock.” He said his favorite song in the performance is “School of Rock,” the song written by the character of Zack, and, yes, he’s biased.
