- Henry Wood, left, reads letters to Chris Lilley during her last episode of “Cooking with Babcha” as Christy Johnson films in a rehearsal of “The Kitchen Witches.”
BAKER CITY — Babcha enjoys her live cooking show, and she’s a bit miffed that her time slot is going away because the community center needs more room for pickleball.
“Babcha pickles beets — why pickle balls?” she says, chopping carrots to add to her borscht soup.
As she cooks up her last episode, Babcha (played by Chris Lilley) doesn’t hold back.
“No more Babcha cabbage roll, no more Babcha borscht. No more Babcha,” she says.
But before she signs off for the final time, a woman from the studio audience (Isobel, played by Sue Samet) storms onto the set and the two fall into a fight fueled by years of hatred.
The thing is, viewers think it’s hilarious, and the two are offered a TV slot if they join for a cooking show.
It takes some convincing from the producer, who is also Babcha’s son (Stephen, played by Henry Wood).
“One of us will be dead in the first five minutes!” Isobel says.
“And one of us charged with murder!” adds Babcha, who’s name is actually Dolly.
And so begins “The Kitchen Witches,” a comedy by Caroline Smith presented by Eastern Oregon Regional Theatre.
And yes, there’s real food, which makes for some entertaining fights when the women really start flinging insults.
“They’ve known each other forever, and hate each other,” said Director Jamie Adams. “It’s very funny.”
Shows are set for Sept. 23-25 and Sept. 30-Oct. 2. Performances are at 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 3 p.m. Sunday at the theater, 2101 Main St.
