JOHN DAY — Looking for a cool spot to drop in a line without having to travel far off into the wild?

Trafton Pond in John Day might be just the place to check out — and not just for fishing either.

With its convenient, in-town location, the pond at the Seventh Street Complex is certainly known for fishing. Open year-round, the waterhole is stocked annually with rainbow trout by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. Anglers can drop their lines from a path that encircles the pond or from a large, easily accessible dock.

No pole? No worries! Bring your lunch, read a book or feed the ducks while enjoying the serenity of this charming little gem.

The pond, built about 20 years ago when the complex was established, is named for the late Leonard Trafton, a longtime John Day resident. Trafton’s lengthy list of local community service includes his commitment and work toward the development of the pond and the surrounding facility.

On that note, while you’re at the pond, take some time to explore the many other recreational activities offered at the Seventh Street Complex. Features of the 23-acre property include baseball/softball diamonds, soccer fields, a frisbee golf course, tennis and basketball courts, two playgrounds, skate and bike parks, a splash pad, picnic shelters and a mile-long paved trail that circles the facility. Restrooms and showers are available as well as concessions, too, during some events.

Trafton Pond and the Seventh Street Complex are operated by the John Day/Canyon City Parks and Recreation Department.

To reach the pond: In John Day, from either direction on Highway 26, turn north on Northwest Bridge Street. After about a half mile, just over the John Day River, turn right on Seventh Street. The entrance to the Seventh Street Complex is just a bit farther on the left.
