BAKER CITY — Sixteen artists will showcase their creative process for the annual Baker City Artists Tour on Saturday, Oct. 8.
The tour is self-guided, and the stops can be visited in any order. Spaces will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event is free.
Several of the artists will be at the same location, so the tour features 12 stops. Two studios are in Haines, and the rest are in Baker City.
Artists include painters, sculptors, a photographer, illustration and cartooning, printmakers and ceramicists.
Tom Reed, who moved to Baker City about 18 months ago and has a background in martial arts, will showcase his photography at 2245 11th St.
“My art is black and white photography, inspired by many but especially by the photographs of Ansel Adams, the plein air paintings of the Sierras by Edgar Payne, the paintings of the Hudson River School and the deep understanding of aesthetics by my teacher, Dr. Shozo Sato, a master of the fine arts of Japan,” Reed said.
Years ago, he was “an adventurer and nomadic wanderer” who traveled with camera and film. Then he took a break from photography, until the digital camera became popular.
“I started taking photographs again,” he said.
And he got back to exploring wilderness areas.
“I got back into that with a camera and it just took off,” he said.
The composition of his photographs, he said, is influenced by his experiences with Japanese Tea Ceremony (chado), which includes the practice of ink and brush calligraphy (shodo), ink painting (sumi-e) and flower arranging (ikebana).
“The compositions are based largely on the concepts of Japanese flower arranging, incorporating the dominant/subdominant/subordinate triunity, as well as abundant use of empty space,” he said. “The experience of awe is central to my orientation as a photographer.”

Downtown, Dawn-Marie deLara will open her space she calls The Briarwood Imagiporium, 1917 Washington St. She describes her work as “magical art and arftul magic.”
“I’m primarily a teacher,” she said, encouraging introspection and self-discovery for her students using collage and dolls.
“Using imagery and combining it,” she said.
Her own works include sculpted animals “dressed in whimsical clothes that are historically inspired,” as well as sculptures.
The artists tour, and First Friday the day before on Oct. 7, culminate her 100-day challenge to focus on making art for 100 days.
Scavenger hunt
New to the tour this year is a scavenger hunt using a downloadable phone app. The hunt is limited to 100 participants, and players earn points by participating in challenges and sharing photos of their tour adventure and learning about public art.
Photos are only shared for the day, and there is no tracking or selling information to marketers. There will be prizes for high points.
Tour maps
Maps and guides will be at most local galleries, at Crossroads Carnegie Arts Center, and online at https://bakercityopenstudios.blogspot.com/. The link to download the scavenger hunt will also be found there.
The tour is sponsored by Baker Art Guild, Crossroads Carnegie Arts Center, Travel Baker, and Baker County Cultural Coalition. For more information, email bakerartguild@gmail.com.
