PRAIRIE CITY — A “Strawberry Mountain Christmas” is coming to Prairie City on Saturday, Nov. 19, as part of the annual Christmas on the Prairie celebration.

“I’m really excited to see the whole event come together,” said Tracy Mund, who is helping organize the event. “This is my first year being involved and we have a lot of wonderful people working hard to make it a great experience for everyone.”

The day begins early with a 5K fun run/walk at Depot Park. Registration starts at 8 a.m. and the race begins at 8:30 a.m. Entry is a donation to the Tree of Giving — either monetary or a toy. Participants are encouraged to dress in festive attire for the chance to win a prize.

The fun run is sponsored by the Hotel Prairie. For information, call Kim Jacobs, 541-620-2126.

Also starting at 8 a.m., the Prairie Baptist Church youth group will serve a pancake breakfast at the teen center until 10 a.m. Cost is $5 adults, $2 children.

To get a headstart on Christmas shopping, check out the American Legion Auxiliary Holiday Bazaar from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Prairie City School cafeteria. In addition to the traditional bazaar finds, patrons can snack on cinnamon rolls in the morning and lunch at mid-day.

Along with the bazaar, the Auxiliary will have a holiday raffle with chances to win one cord of firewood, various gift certificates, and multiple baskets. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5. For details, contact an Auxiliary member or call 541-620-0957.

Also, The Wright Sign Co. will host a porch sign party at the public works building at 1 p.m. Register on Facebook (search for The Wright Sign Co.).

For the kids

The Greater Prairie City Community Association (GPCCA) will be hosting Santa and additional events for children at the Prairie City Community Center.

Festivities start at 11 a.m. with a children’s Christmas program, followed by Santa’s arrival at 11:30 a.m. Yellow Sage Photography will be taking Santa and/or family photos throughout the day.

GPCCA will also provide fun activities for children from cookie decorating to writing letters to Santa.

At 4:30 p.m., the tree lighting will happen at the big city center tree, with Santa there to turn on the lights. Warm drinks, cookies and heaters will be out for the community.

Closing off the day, the Prairie City cheerleaders will be hosting The Polar Express movie night at the Community Center. Tickets are $5 and support the cheerleaders and camps. All children must be accompanied an adult.

Ornament Hunt

Throughout the day, there will be a Strawberry Mountain ornament hunt with ornaments painted by Prairie City students. The ornament hunt will coincide with the school art contest.

Pick up a form at various downtown businesses, the bazaar or the community center to participate. Visit participating downtown businesses to spot the Strawberry Mountain ornaments, and stop by the community center to judge the art.

When finished, turn the entry into Bar WB to be entered in the drawing for ornaments and a gift basket.
