On an episode of “Wait, Wait…Don’t Tell Me” — one of my favorite podcasts from NPR — the host invited guest Sean Hayes to the celebrity portion of the show. During the conversation, Hayes talked about his own podcast, which at that time was ranked as one of the top comedy podcasts.
It’s called “Smartless” and features Hayes (famous for his TV role on “Will & Grace”), Jason Bateman (well-known television and movie actor, and now director) and Will Arnett (who starred in “Arrested Development” with Bateman, and also lends his deep voice to advertisements and many animated movies).
These three friends started the podcast during the pandemic as a way to spend time with each other, even if it was on a screen. They rotate turns inviting a mystery guest, who is revealed during the first few minutes of each episode.
This lends itself to an unscripted show as the other two ask questions off the top of their head, since they didn’t have time to prepare.
These three are each funny in their own way, and their banter back and forth often has me laughing out loud.
The first episode was July 20, 2020. Since then, they’ve released a new one every week. On Nov. 14, they released their 123rd episode.
Their guests come from a wide variety of backgrounds. There are quite a few actors (Melissa McCarthy, Dax Sheppard, Will Ferrell and many, many more) along with athletes, musicians and political figures.
One of my favorite recent episodes was with hockey star Wayne Gretzky. It was fascinating to learn about his life.
Hayes, Bateman and Arnett do tend to digress sometimes, but I feel like I have a glimpse into their friendship and it’s a nice way to spend an hour.
