What We’re Into

In the wake of the Nov. 30 Spotify Wrapped (a review of the music a listener plays on the streaming service over the course of 2022) it is no shock to my friends and family that Taylor Swift sits at the top of the list of my most played artists.

This, of course, is due to her releasing her 10th studio album, “Midnights” — particularly the “3 a.m. edition.”

I’ll be brutally honest, Swift could release an album of non-stop static and I would still play it on repeat.

“Midnights” is a masterpiece, though I am fully biased. Being someone who’s a notorious night owl, this album is a love letter to people like me, those who lay awake at night over-analyzing everything that they’ve said or done.

Combining poetic lyrics with contemporary synths and auto-tune, Swift created an album that voices her inner thoughts, staying true to her narrative songwriting style.

Of the album’s deluxe edition, it’s very hard to choose just one song that stands above the others. That being said, “Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve” certainly gets played a bit more than other tunes. The song, detailing regrets over past relationships, calls out to my inherent need to over-analyze every single lyric in an attempt to detail the hidden story behind the song.

I’d be opening myself up to copious amounts of judgment if I were to say how much I have played the album since its Oct. 21 release, but whatever number comes to mind, triple it.

Hopefully one day soon, I’ll be able to bring myself to listen to another album. Until then, I’ll be subconsciously singing along as Swift sings “Karma is my boyfriend.”
