- The Wallowa County Humane Society in Enterprise is offering a movie night for kids — and a night out for parents — on Saturday, March 11, 6:30 p.m. After the movie, youth can visit the cats and kittens in the “Catty Shack.”
ENTERPRISE — If you and your significant other are looking for a safe and fun place for your children while you have that long planned date night, the Wallowa County Humane Society may have just what you’re looking for: Kids Movie Night and Parents’ Night Out.
Sherry Murphy, humane society volunteer and coordinator of the program, said it is a community program to give parents an opportunity to go out to dinner and spend quality time together.
“We take the kids and parents have quiet time alone,” she said.
The Humane Society provides the movie, popcorn and punch. The Wallowa County Humane Society is located at 119 E. Main St. in Enterprise.
The movie starts at 7 p.m. and the evening concludes at 9 p.m. The movie night is for children ages 5 to 12. Although there is no charge for the movie, donations are gladly accepted. A suggested donation is $5.
There are only three rules for movie night, Murphy said.
“One, say please and thank you. Two, let us know immediately if there’s a spill. And three, don’t come if you’re sick,” she said.
There are even cats and kittens to pet after the movie, in the “Catty Shack.”
“The kids love the animals,” Murphy said.
She said she sees it as possibly fostering Humane Society volunteers. She related one story of a little boy who told her, “‘I just love this place!’ That just gave me such a good feeling. I love kids,” she said.
The program began in November with the showing of “Cars.” December’s movie was “Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.”
Murphy said that although attendance has been low, she expects that “Once we get the word out, I just know it will go gang busters!” she said.
January’s movie is “Toy Story” showing on Jan. 14 and February’s movie is “The Lion King” on Feb. 10.

About
Murphy said there are a couple of things she wants people to know about the Humane Society.
First, it is always looking for volunteers.
“Due to COVID, volunteers dropped off and haven’t come back,” she said.
Also, the Humane Society relies solely on donations for its operation. It receives no outside help from any national organizations such as the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) or the National Humane Society.
“Donations from folks stay in the community,” she said.
If you would like to become a Humane Society volunteer or to donate, contact Carol Vencill, Wallowa County Humane Society president, at 541-398-8586, or stop by the Enterprise location.
Another way to support is by shopping at the Re-tail Boutique, which is open Thursday through Saturday, 11 a.m.-3 p.m., except holidays.
