BAKER CITY, NORTH POWDER — The Greenneck Daredevils are heading back to Baker County for two live shows this month.
“We’re really excited,” said Billy Sheeley, an original member of the band.
Although the pandemic kept them away for the last few years, the band is looking forward to a return that finds them playing in a new venue and hitting the slopes at Anthony Lakes Mountain Resort before providing live tunes for the area’s 60th anniversary celebration.
The shows
Their first appearance at Churchill School, 3451 Broadway St., happens Friday, Jan. 20. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 6:45 p.m. (Enter through the 16th Street parking lot.) Food will be available from Young Roots Farm.
“We’re really excited to try out this new venue,” Sheeley said.
Tickets are $10 in advance at churchillbaker.com, or $15 at the door. Youth age 15 and under have free admission with a ticket-holding adult.
On Saturday, Jan. 21, the band heads up to Anthony Lakes Mountain Resort to play from 3-6 p.m. in the Starbottle Saloon. This is part of a full-day anniversary celebration — see the Jan. 19 issue of Go! for details.
The band
The Greenneck Daredevils is based in Hood River, where they mostly play local shows at breweries and festivals. In a typical year, they play 20 to 30 shows.
“We’re constantly looking for different venues,” Sheeley said.
They formed 10 years ago, and have had the same members for about the last five years. Their sound is described as a blend of Americana, folk, country and rock.
They recently released their first full-length album titled “Gypsy Road.”
Members are Sheeley on vocals and guitar, Ryan Kolberg on bass, Matt Farmer on mandolin, Doug Stepina on electric guitar and Joe Silliman on drums.
As for the band name? Sheeley said they played as “The Moonlight Ramblers” for about a week before brainstorming a new name.
A search in the Urban Dictionary solidified their choice of “greenneck”: “an environmentalist who practices traditional outdoor skills and pursuits.”
And the “daredevil” part? That speaks to the band members’ “adventurous nature,” Sheeley said.
