Classes start soon at the Josephy Center

JOSEPH — The Josephy Center for Arts and Culture, 403 N. Main St., is offering new art classes this month. For information, or to register, visit josephy.org.

Intermediate Ceramics begins Jan. 16 and meets on Mondays, 4-6 p.m., through March 6, plus three open studio Saturdays. Cost is $195.

Foundations for Beginners in Ceramics starts Jan. 19 and meets Thursdays, 10 a.m. to noon, through March 9. There will also be three open studio Saturdays. Cost is $190.

On Sunday, Jan. 29, Heidi Muller begins her five-week workshop on learning how to play the mountain dulcimer. The class meets Sundays, 2-3:30 p.m., through Feb. 26. Cost is $150. Rentals are available for $50 — for information, email heidi.muller.music@gmail.com.

Poet featured at First Draft Writers’ Series

PENDLETON — Poet Lex Runciman will be the featured writer at the First Draft Writers’ Series, happening Thursday, Jan. 19, 7 p.m. at the Pendleton Center for the Arts, 214 N. Following graduate study, Runciman taught for 11 years at Oregon State University and then 25 years at Linfield College, where he was twice named Edith Green Distinguished Professor. He was recognized with an Oregon Book Award in 1989. His sixth book, “Salt Moons: Poems 1981-2016,” was published by Salmon Poetry (Ireland) in 2017, and a new volume, “Unlooked For,” is due soon.

After Runciman’s reading there will be a short discussion with the audience, followed by Open Mic, where anyone can read their own 3-5 minute original work, either in person or via Zoom. First Draft Writers’ Series is funded in part through a grant from Oregon Humanities. More information is available at PendletonArts.org.

Umatilla Parks & Rec skates into January

UMATILLA — A winter wonderland is awaiting the community as Umatilla Parks & Recreation gears up for Mommy and Me Skate Night.

The whole family is invited to skate into the new year for $7. The event is Jan. 12, 6-8 p.m. at Umatilla RV and Park, 1710 Quincy Ave.

January events planned at Cook Memorial Library

LA GRANDE — Cook Memorial Library, 2006 Fourth St., offers storytime for the youngest patrons every Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in the Story Circle. Each session includes stories and a craft.

Kitia Chambers will lead Community Yoga on Wednesday, Jan. 18 from 4-5 p.m. in the Community Room. This free class is open to all ages and registration is not required.

Ages 12 to 18 are invited to Teen Writing Circle on Wednesday, Jan. 18 from 4-5 p.m. in the studio. Participants will create characters, build worlds and share ideas. Supplies are provided and registration is not needed.

For adults, Self Care Saturday is happening Jan. 21 at 1 p.m. in the studio. Participants will create vision boards. Supplies are provided; registration is not required.

SAGE Center shows ‘Love and Monsters’ Jan. 20

BOARDMAN — After surviving the monster apocalypse, Joel leaves his cozy underground bunker in a quest to reunite with his ex. To find out what happens to the lovably hapless chap, you won’t want to miss Movie Night in Boardman.

“Love and Monsters” is Friday, Jan. 20 at the SAGE Center, 101 Olson Road. The doors open at 5 p.m. with the movie starting at 6 p.m.

Boondock Boys bust out at Wildhorse

MISSION — A Southern-style rock and country band will play a pair of performances at Wildhorse Resort & Casino.

Hailing from the small town of Grand Ronde, the group offers a big sound with both heartfelt originals and explosive covers. The shows are Friday and Saturday, Jan. 20-21, 8 p.m. to midnight in the Wildhorse Sports Bar, located off Interstate 84 Exit 216. There is no cover charge.

A dance for dads and daughters

PENDLETON — Registration is now open for the Daddy-Daughter Dance set for Saturday, Feb. 11, 6-9 p.m. at the Pendleton Convention Center.

This is for dads and daughters from age kindergarten to grade 8. The evening includes a DJ, decorations, a chocolate fountain, drawings, gifts at the door and a posed picture. The registration fee is $25 per person. Register online at pendletonparksandrec.com/parksrec/page/daddy-daughter-dance.

Pianos tune-up for return performance

Snow film shreds into Pendleton

PENDLETON — Get ready for some shredding fun as “Daymaker” will be screened in Pendleton. The 73rd Warren Miller film, it is shot on location in Alaska, Colorado, Idaho, Utah, Canada, Greece and Switzerland.

The viewing is Saturday, Jan. 21, 7 p.m. at the Vert Auditorium, 480 SW Dorion Ave. There will be door prizes, including lift tickets and snow apparel.

Try your detective skills at a family-friendly mystery

LA GRANDE — A family-friendly murder mystery dinner is coming Saturday, Jan. 21, organized by Le Bebe Cakes Bakery.

The “Dead of Winter” mystery event begins at 5:30 p.m. at Grande Lumiere Event Center, 1101 Washington Ave. This is for ages 10 and older. The cost is $49 for adults and $29 for minors. Costumes are encouraged.

Planned Parenthood sponsors film screening

WALLA WALLA — A short film chronicling the journey of two young adults, who drive 400 miles from their rural Idaho town in pursuit of an out-of-state abortion, can be viewed at the Power House Theatre.

Presented by Planned Parenthood of Greater Washington and North Idaho, “Walla Walla” will be screened Sunday, Jan. 22 at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., at 111 N. Sixth Ave., Walla Walla. Three musicians join Tunesmith Night

ENTERPRISE — The Wallowa Valley Music Alliance will present the next session of Tunesmith Night on Saturday, Jan. 14, at the Odd Fellows Hall, 105 NE First St.

The evening will feature three musicians sharing original music in a round-robin format. This month brings Bart Budwig, Casey Shelden and Patrice Webb to the stage. Admission is $10.

HERMISTON — Mark your calendars and get ready to Follow Your Art. The 12th annual surf and turf dinner fundraiser will benefit the Hermiston Education Foundation.
