NORTH POWDER — Anthony Lakes Mountain Resort is celebrating 60 years this month with a special day of events on Saturday, Jan. 21.
And, in the spirit of the first opening day in 1963, everyone is encouraged to wear 1960s-style ski attire.
The mountain opens at 9 a.m.
But one event — the dummy downhill race — will take some preparation.
For this unique race, participants build a dummy that is attached to skis or a snowboard. The dummies are then sent, one at a time, down the lower part of Schuss Alley to fly off the jump at the bottom.
Dummies are judged on creativity, how well they jump and survive, and crowd appeal.
Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place.
The dummies must be registered through the retail shop by noon Jan. 21, and then will be on display prior to the contest, which starts at 3 p.m.
Photo Wall
Everyone is invited to bring a favorite memory of Anthony Lakes to pin on the photo wall, located inside the lodge.
Cup Race
The Anthony Lakes Cup Race is a dual giant slalom fun run on Broadway that is open to all. Register in the Brown Bag room — entry is $5 per run and proceeds benefit the race team. This is open to skiers and snowboarders.
Live music
The lift runs until 4 p.m., but the Greenneck Daredevils — a band from Hood River — starts playing at 3 p.m. upstairs in the lodge. The music goes until 6 p.m.
All day
Elkhorn Grills will be serving up smoked snacks all day, or head inside the lodge for food and drinks. For more information about Anthony Lakes, or to stay updated on events, visit anthonylakes.com.
