Learn about Project Heartbeat Feb. 7

JOSEPH — Dick Burch, founder of Project Heartbeat in Wallowa County, will speak on the topic of “AEDs and Heart Attacks In The News” at the next Brown Bag on Tuesday, Feb. 7, from noon to 1 p.m. at the Josephy Center for Arts and Culture, 403 N. Main St. The talk is free and open to the public.

Burch will talk about Project Heartbeat, demonstrate how the Automated External Defibrillator (AED) works, and show a short video about a young high school student near Atlanta, Georgia, who was revived using an AED after she went into sudden cardiac arrest during a volleyball game.

AEDs have recently been in the news after Buffalo Bills football player Damar Hamlin’s sudden cardiac arrest during a game. He was revived with the use of an AED.

Burch started Project Heartbeat in 2009 with the goal of placing AEDs in the county for easy access when there is a sudden cardiac event. Sudden cardiac arrest is when the heart suddenly stops beating due to an interruption in its electrical impulse. The AED delivers a shock which restarts the heart until medical personnel can arrive.

Since its inception in 2009, Project Heartbeat, a 501c3 nonprofit in partnership with the American Red Cross and Rotary Club of Wallowa County, has placed more than 100 AEDs around Wallowa County in schools, businesses, senior centers and medical facilities. Burch has also trained, by his estimation, between 2,500 and 3,000 individuals to use the AED.
