Two lives told through letters

Jordan Remien, left, and Christy Johnson are the cast of two for “Love Letters,” presented by Eastern Oregon Regional Theatre in Baker City Feb. 10-12 and Feb. 17-19.

BAKER CITY — The set is simple, the actors just two.

The story of “Love Letters” unfolds in the form of letters — a disappearing art in the modern world of emails and texts — as Andy and Melissa navigate childhood, adolescence and adulthood.

“They read the letters they’ve written to each other over 50 years,” said Lesley Gaunt, who is directing the play for Eastern Oregon Regional Theatre. “It’s really interesting to follow their lives.”

The letter writing begins when Andy attends Melissa’s birthday party, and she sends him a thank you note asking why he gave her “The Lost Princess of Oz.”

The letters begin in earnest, and the audience learns about their separate lives that intertwine and then diverge over the decades.

She writes to Andy when he’s in the hospital after tonsil surgery.

He invites her to visit him at college.

They get mad when one’s attention shifts to another person, and at times one letter writer keeps writing despite the lack of response.

But the letters, as much as Melissa claims to hate writing, continue well into adulthood.

At one point, Andy captures the everlasting essence of a letter with this poignant sentence: “You can read me today, tomorrow — any time you want until you die.”

And although he enjoys writing for the sake of writing, these letters to Melissa are special.

“I love writing you — you most of all. I always have,” he writes.

“Sometimes I think of it as ‘friend letters,’ but they become really close,” Gaunt said.

“Love Letters” was written by A.R. Gurney. The cast features Jordan Remien as Andy and Christy Johnson as Melissa.
