College Community Theatre presents ‘The Wizard of Oz’
PENDLETON — College Community Theatre presents the final performances of “The Wizard of Oz” March 9-12 in the Bob Clapp Theatre at Blue Mountain Community College. Based on the book series by L. Frank Baum, “The Wizard of Oz” follows Dorothy Gale as she is transported from Kansas to the wonderful world of Oz.
Shows are at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are available at www.collegecommunitytheatre.com. Prices are $20 adult, $16 senior and $12 for child/student.
Fishtrap Reads presents special program March 15
ENTERPRISE — Fishtrap Reads continues with a presentation of “A Woman’s Role in the American West” on Wednesday, March 15, at noon.
Join virtually at fishtrap.org, or in person for a watch party and conversation at Fishtrap, 107 W. Main St. Afterward, it can be viewed on Fishtrap’s YouTube channel.
The program is presented by Sarah Sherman, project manager for the National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center in Baker City.
Viewers will learn about the role women played upon settling the Oregon Territory including 19th century gender norms and stereotypes, women as moral guardians and purveyors of culture, and a look at clothing and fashion on the Oregon Trail.
Sherman hails from the commonwealth of Virginia, and after spending some time in Arizona, moved her small family to Oregon in May 2022.
Those who gather at Fishtrap will have time, after the 30-minute program, to share thoughts and reflections on the presentation and how it relates to this year’s featured book, “The Jump-Off Creek” by Molly Gloss.

Dayville Dancehall hosts Second Saturdays
DAYVILLE — Dayville has launched a Second Saturdays event series at the Dayville Community Hall. The next session is Saturday, March 11.
Doors open at 5 p.m., followed by happy hour from 5:30-6:30 p.m. At 7 p.m., music will be provided by John Grant and the Western Review.
Wanderlost plays Anthony Lakes March 11
NORTH POWDER — Anthony Lakes Mountain Resort welcomes Wanderlost, an alternative country band from Pendleton, to play live Saturday, March 11, 3-6 p.m. in the Starbottle Saloon.
Formed in 2016, members include Tyler Brooks (vocals and guitar), Alex Muller (vocals and bass), Shaner Applegate (lead guitar) and Jim White (percussion). The band plays a mix of original music and alt-country/Americana covers.
“The style of music is a blend of everything from honky tonk and rock and roll to punk rock,” Brooks said.
March 11 is also Bert’s Day at the ski area in memory of Bert Vanderwall, who helped develop Anthony Lakes. To celebrate, lift tickets are $5 off all day (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) and everyone is encouraged to “ski Bert’s Run, ring the bell and remember what a great place he helped establish.”
Learn how to make paper flowers
BAKER CITY — Everyone is invited to kick start spring by making bouquets of paper flowers in a workshop on Thursday, March 16, at Crossroads Carnegie Art Center, 2020 Auburn Ave.
Ginger Rembold leads the class, which meets from 6-8 p.m. Participants are asked to bring a pair of scissors. All other materials are provided. Cost is $16 members, $24 nonmembers, plus a $5 supply fee. Children age 12 and younger can attend for $5 with a paid adult.

Cove’s Shamrock Shuffle is March 18
COVE — The Cove Education Foundation’s annual Shamrock Shuffle Fun Run is set for Saturday, March 18 at the Ascension School Camp and Conference Center, 1104 Church St. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the race starts at 10 a.m.
Choose a one-mile course or a 5K that goes through the Umatilla Loop of the Tish Croom Nature Trail, which is a dirt path.
Entry is $15. All proceeds fund scholarships for Cove High School graduates.
Kids participating in the race will receive a voucher for a green mint ice cream cone at the Cove Drive in, redeemable the day of the race, any time after 11 a.m.

Micro Chautauqua coming soon
RICHLAND — The second-annual Chautauqua Music Festival is set for May 19-21 in Richland, but a “micro” version is happening Saturday, March 18, at the Eagle Valley Grange with music, food and a fund-raising raffle and auction.
The doors open at 5 p.m. and tickets are $5 or free for ages 12 and younger. Events begin at 6 p.m. with raffles, a live performance by The Red Shoes Band from La Grande, open mic, dancing and a live auction led by Mib Dailey.
The Chautauqua committee welcomes new items for the live auction as well as the silent auction. Donations can be dropped off at Sara’s Café in Richland, or at Aline Murray’s home across the street from Sara’s.
“This is our one and only fundraiser for the Chautauqua and we do appreciate donations to help fund that event,” Murray said.
Anyone who wants to participate in the open mic session on March 18 is encouraged to sign up by calling Murray at 541-377-5545.

Third Thursday wine walk returns
BAKER CITY — Baker City Downtown’s Third Thursday wine walk returns March 16. From 5-7 p.m., purchase a map and wine glass for $12 at Hatch, 2019 Main St., then visit participating businesses. Proceeds from this month’s walk will support Crossroads Carnegie Art Center, which is celebrating 60 years in 2023.
New to the walk are several raffles. One is for people who dress for the theme (Shamrock Shuffle). The other is to receive three tickets and then visit the three featured businesses for a chance to win.
D’Club L’Eveque, featuring Debbie Friedman, John Woodard and Lindianne Sarno, will play live music at Royal Artisan throughout the event.
Join a Happy Hour art class
PENDLETON — Pendleton Center for the Arts continues the free “Happy Hour” art class series for adults on Tuesday, March 14, at the center, 214 N. Main St. This session is creative mending with Stephanie Huffman from 6-7:30 p.m.
Attendees can bring clothing, fabrics, etc. in need of small repairs, and learn the skill set to bring them back to life in a fun and colorful way through custom mending. Beginners are welcome.
Zac Grooms tunes up for St. Paddy’s party
CONDON — The Buckhorn Saloon welcomes Arlington native Zac Grooms for its St. Patrick’s Day party. The event is Friday, March 17, 7 p.m. at 202 S. Main St.
Frontman for Brewers Grade Band, the Eastern Oregon singer/songwriter has performed all across the Pacific Northwest for two decades. In 2018, his group wrangled in the country band of the year award from the International Music and Entertainment Association.
The party features drink and dinner specials. In addition to classic cocktails and house creations, the Buckhorn offers locally sourced craft brews and Oregon wines. The bistro menu features house favorites like The Buckhorn Burger and steak bites, featuring Painted Hills Beef.

Catch ‘The Luck of the Irish’ in Elgin
ELGIN, PENDLETON — Opera House Shakespeare Company presents “The Luck of the Irish” at the Hale Turner Little Theater in Elgin on March 10-12 and 17-19, and at the Vert Little Theater in Pendleton on March 31 and April 1-2.
Described as “an evening of entertainment,” “The Luck of the Irish” will feature Irish music, dance and poetry, as well as two one-act plays by Irish playwright John Millington Synge: “Riders to the Sea,” a tragedy, and “In the Shadow of the Glen,” a dark comedy.
“The Luck of the Irish” runs March 10-12 and March 17-19 at the Hale Turner Little Theater in Elgin. In Pendleton, catch the show March 31 and April 1-2 at the Vert Little Theater in Pendleton.

BMCC powwow features all ages on March 11
PENDLETON — The sound of drums will set the beat during the annual Blue Mountain Community College Powwow.
Fred Hill, of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, will serve as the master of ceremonies for the free event. The grand entry is Saturday, March 11, 1 p.m. in the McCrae Activity Center on the BMCC campus, 2411 NW Carden Ave. Door prizes will be given away.
The tribal dance contest features several age groups — from tiny tots to adults. Dance categories include traditional, fancy/grass and fancy/jingle.

Good Sax plays tunes March 17
BAKER CITY — The Good Sax band is playing its first gig in more than a year on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, at AJ’s Corner Brick Bar and Grill, 1840 Main St.
The music starts at 7 p.m. Listeners can expect “a night of funky twisted jams encouraging audience participation, shouting, dancing and all that jazz,” said band member Dan Sizer.
Good Sax is also set to play at Corner Brick on April 21 at 7 p.m.

EOU presents ‘Next to Normal’ in March
LA GRANDE — Eastern Oregon University’s Theatre program will present a second weekend of its rendition of the American rock musical “Next to Normal,” a Pulitzer Prize winning musical that discusses mental illness as it follows the life of Diana Goodman.
The play will take place in Schwarz Theater on March 10 and 11 at 7 p.m., and March 12 at 2 p.m. Tickets will cost $15 for general admission, $10 for veterans and seniors, and free for EOU students.

UMATILLA — The luck of the Irish and laughs will abound as Old Nicks Restaurant + Lounge hosts an evening of stand-up comedy on Friday, March 17.
