- Andrew Sleighter will present New Year’s Eve Comedy on Dec. 31, 2023, at the Power House Theatre, Walla Walla.
UMATILLA COUNTY — For those looking for an evening of fun, there are several opportunities to get their laugh on as a trio of local venues are hosting stand-up comedy events.
Old Nicks
The luck of the Irish and laughs will abound as Old Nicks Restaurant + Lounge hosts Alex Elkin on Friday, March 17. The show starts at 8 p.m. at 610 Sixth St., Umatilla. Opening the show is Julie Hatfield of Hood River.
Performing stand-up for nearly 30 years, Elkin won the 2016 San Francisco Comedy Competition and is the 2018 champion of the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino’s Comedy Cage Match. In addition, he was a finalist in the Hollywood Laugh Factory’s International Donald Trump Impersonator Contest in 2017.
Living in Eugene, Elkin headlines comedy clubs across the country, as well as performing in bars, casinos and cruise ships. Also, in July 2018, he was selected to entertain U.S. troops in Kuwait, Iraq and Syria. Elkin released his latest album, “I’m Sorry, What?,” in 2022.
Hatfield caught the stand-up bug a handful of years ago — doing a short set during a friend’s 50th birthday party. It’s something she had wanted to do for a long time.
“I did a lot of community theater and felt pretty comfortable onstage,” she said. “I loved it and I thought, ‘hey I can do this.’”
After getting those initial laughs, Hatfield decided to take some classes to improve her craft. In addition, she participated in workshops and performed at open mics.
And Hatfield tips her hat to Elkin, who made arrangements for her first paid gig. She served as emcee during his show at the Hood River Elks Lodge. Since then, Hatfield said they have performed about a dozen times together.
“He’s been kind to me and given a lot of good advice,” she said. “When we do a show together, I think we have a really good balance. People won’t get the same comedian — I have my flavor and he has his.”
Tickets are $18 each or two for $30. For more information, search bit.ly/3SwKU52 or call 541-922-3896.
