PENDLETON — Boys who have dreamed of becoming superheroes will have the opportunity next month — alongside their moms.

Pendleton Parks and Recreation is bringing back “Mother/Son Superhero Training” on April 15. Although the mother and son event is the companion event to the Daddy/Daughter Dance, Pendleton Recreation Supervisor Jon Bullard said the feel of the event is completely different.

“This is not a formal event — come to be goofy and have fun,” Bullard said. “Moms get to play too. They can jump in the bounce house and do everything alongside the kids.”

Instead of the formal wear often seen at the Daddy/Daughter Dance, for Mother/Son Superhero Training, Parks and Rec is encouraging creative costumes and clothes participants can move in through an obstacle course. In addition, the Superhero Training elements will include games of skill, a bounce house (again, that moms can use too), crafts and refreshments. Sons may also need to be ready to save mom from a villain, and there will be an opportunity for pictures as a memento of the experience.

Mother/Son Superhero Training is open to boys ages 5 or older and their mother figures.

Bullard said the Daddy Daughter Dance has become a family tradition, and they hope to replicate that success with Mother/Son Superhero Training. The event is designed to give moms and sons an opportunity to bond while also learning how to save the world.

“The Daddy/Daughter Dance has been one of our spotlight community events, and we want to make sure moms and sons have the same opportunities,” Bullard said. “I think it’s important to give families an opportunity to spend time together — and it’s important for us to create that opportunity.”

Mother/Son Superhero Training runs from 5-8 p.m. April 15 at the Pendleton Recreation Center, 500 SW Dorion Ave. Tickets are $20 per person and available now at pendletonparksandrec.com.
