Sweet N Juicy plays Aug. 3 at Side A in La Grande.

LA GRANDE, ENTERPRISE — A fruity trio is returning to Eastern Oregon for two concerts — one on a rooftop, and one at a brewpub.

Portland-based band Sweet N Juicy is easy to recognize — just look for the bass-playing banana, the strawberry on keyboards and the pineapple playing drums.

“It’s easily identifiable and easily branded,” said Juicy the Strawberry.

And yes, they prefer to be known by their stage names: Sweet the Banana, N the Pineapple (the “N” is short for a very, very long name) and Juicy the Strawberry.

Sweet and Juicy are the original members of the band, which came to be after Sweet bought a costume for Halloween — a yellow banana — that wouldn’t scare his son.

“I never thought I’d be a bass playing banana,” he said with a laugh.

Next came the strawberry, then the pineapple — chosen because they were the least expensive fruit-themed outfits.

If their costumes get a smile, well, that’s the whole point.

“It’s all about having fun,” Sweet said.

And, with more than five hours of material, they can tailor a set list to the ages of their audience.

“We have fans as young as four years old,” Sweet said. “Our job is to be as entertaining as possible for the audience in front of us.”

Their music takes them around the west and south to Montana, Washington, California, Oregon and Arizona.

They’ve logged about 400 shows so far as the trio. And yes, they wash the costumes — frequently.

Sweet N Juicy will play Thursday, July 13, 6 p.m. at Market Place Fresh Foods, 1912 Fourth St., in La Grande.

On Friday, July 14, they play at Terminal Gravity, 813 School St., in Enterprise, at 7 p.m.

Looking ahead, they’ll return to La Grande on Thursday, Aug. 17, for the summer concert series in Riverside Park. The show starts at 6 p.m.
