ENTERPRISE — The Inland Northwest Musicians open their 25th anniversary season with an orchestra concert at Enterprise Christian Church, 85035 Joseph Highway, on Saturday, Oct. 14, 4 p.m.

The directors are R. Lee Friese and Phillip Simpson.

This concert is sponsored by Wallowa Valley Networks and Winding Waters Clinic.

Admission is free with donations welcome. A reception will follow the concert.

To celebrate the start of the 25th season, the orchestra will perform four unique pieces. In a press release, the organization described each one, and the featured solos.

“The Irish Suite,” arranged by Leroy Anderson in 1947, is a compilation of six Irish folk tunes. This suite was performed by Inland Northwest Musicians at the inaugural concerts of the organization in Weston and Pendleton on Oct. 9-10, 1999.

“Elegie,” written by French composer Gabriel Faure in 1880, features principal cello soloist Jane Bane from Enterprise, accompanied by the string orchestra. Bane is a charter member of the orchestra and has driven from the Wallowa Valley weekly to rehearse in Pendleton. Her son James and daughter-in-law Michelle both play with the orchestra as well, and her 15-month-old granddaughter has been attending rehearsals from the time she was 2 months old.

“William Tell Overture,” composed in 1828 by Gioacchino Rossini, paints a picture of life in the Swiss Alps in four continuous parts. The prelude features Bane as a solo cello voice answered by the remaining cellos, basses and violas. This leads into the dynamic second section by the full orchestra representing a storm sweeping in and raging before ebbing away. The third section signifies the calm after the storm and features flute played by Amy Bowersox of Pendleton and English horn played by Ashley Walchli of Hermiston. The finale is often called “The March of the Soldiers” with the trumpet section leading into the conquering battle. This segment is often used in popular culture to denote galloping horses, a race or a hero riding to the rescue — its most famous use in that respect is as the theme music for “The Lone Ranger.”

“Palladio,” completed in 1995 by Karl Jenkins, is named for the Italian Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio (1508–1580). The work in three movements for string orchestra is in the form of a concerto grosso. The second movement features two violin soloists: Alice Massey from Athena, the concertmaster and one of the charter members of the orchestra, as well as the Music Director and Conductor of the orchestra, R. Lee Friese of Athena, also a charter member.

Founded in 1999, Inland Northwest Musicians is comprised of volunteer musicians from throughout Northeastern Oregon and Southeastern Washington. For more information, visit inlandnorthwestmusicians.com.
