PENDLETON — From the purple-and-white chessboard stage to a slew of special effects, College Community Theatre hopes to transport audiences to Wonderland this November.
“We have a unique look at this story from the inside out and even a few surprises for you,” director Anna Curry said. “You’ll see all your favorite characters in a new way. I hope our guests of all ages will be delighted.”
CCT’s production of “Alice in Wonderland” runs Nov. 2-12 at the Bob Clapp Theatre on Blue Mountain Community College’s Pendleton campus. The show will follow the Brainerd Duffield script based on Lewis Carroll’s novel.
“I felt this adaptation by Brainerd Duffield had the strongest representation of characters and scenarios audiences will recognize and enjoy,” Curry said. “The dream Alice has of falling down the rabbit hole into Wonderland is suddenly very real to her — every character she encounters poses a new challenge or threat, and Alice has to figure out how to find her way. In all its nonsense, it all makes perfect sense.”
Pendleton High School student Abby Foust has the title role of Alice.
“It’s fun. I get to do nonsense with a bunch of people,” Foust said. “This show is really just a lot of fun.”
The cast includes a full range of actors from young children through adults. It also combines veteran performers and those brand-new to the Pendleton stage.
For example, audiences may recognize Alice (Foust) from roles in “Little Women” and “The Wizard of Oz,” while The Mad Hatter (Brian Warren) is making his CCT debut.
“It’s fun. It’s a blast,” Warren said. “There’s a lot of little tricks that I haven’t seen in any of the other shows — things with paint and with costumes and the sets. There’s so many new aspects to this show. It’s not any ‘Alice in Wonderland’ I’ve ever seen. It’s not the Disney version, it’s not the book, it’s CCT’s.”
Foust described the show as “fun and different.”
“We haven’t really done a show like this before,” she said. “We did ‘Wizard of Oz,’ but it wasn’t quite as insane as this. It’s very different from anything we’ve done.”
She said the Cheshire Cat scene is her favorite because it has a few surprises for the audience. Foust also gets to work with her younger sister, Lexi, who is the Alice understudy as well as a few other parts in the show.
The main cast also includes Mitchell Fuller as the Cheshire Cat, Robb Jones as the White Rabbit, Keith Udy as the Caterpillar and William Wehrli as the Queen of Hearts. The full cast list is available on CCT’s website.
