December dawns with new art shows

BAKER CITY — First Friday, Dec. 1, brings new art shows to galleries and shops across Baker City. Here’s a look at what’s happening this month.

Churchill Hall Pass Gallery

3451 Broadway St.

Churchill will feature work by Janet Freeman, a Baker City based painter who specializes in abstracts inspired by nature and animal portraits. She is a graduate of Parsons School of Design in New York City, earning a bachelor’s in fashion design.

After a long career designing and manufacturing apparel for the snow sports industry, Freeman left Portland 2½ years ago to move to Baker City. (Her family used to own the Bar C Bar Ranch in Sumpter and she spent summers there working as a cowgirl.) She said she is “inspired by the stunning natural surroundings of the Baker Valley, and aims to put a spotlight on the beauty around her.”

Crossroads Carnegie Art Center

2020 Auburn Ave.

“Christmas at Crossroads” opens Friday, Dec. 1, 5-8 p.m. Holiday music will be provided by Garwood Allen.

This show features local and regional fine artists, designers and craft artists who will show handmade ornaments, paintings, clay, fiber, glass, wood, metal, mixed media, jewelry, small sculptures, holiday cards and more.

Crossroads is regularly open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the First Friday show opening continuing till 8 p.m. each month.

Briarwood Imagiporium

1917 Washington Ave.

Briarwood will stay open until 8:30 p.m. and feature artist-made holiday decor and gifts, plus gift wrapping assistance.

Royal Artisan

1912 Main St.

Royal Artisan will be showing “Explorations in Mixed Media” by contemporary artist Mark McGibbon. The reception begins at 5 p.m. with music by D’Club L’Eveque.

Broderick Gallery

1829 Main St.

This gallery recently reopened and will be open until 8 p.m. on First Friday. Currently on display is Broderick’s work, as well as work by artists from Boise, Scotland, Chile and Cuba.

Baker Food Co-op

2008 Broadway St.

The Co-op will feature jewelry by Chris Cantrell on Friday from 4-7 p.m.

Sweet Wife Baking

2028 Main St.

Sweet Wife will feature a special sisters show with Sarah and Emily Wynn from 5-8 p.m.

Other locations

Many shops and restaurants stay open late during the First Friday art walk, so be sure to explore downtown.

Marketplace
