HERMISTON — The magic of a school book fair is back for adults this month in Hermiston.

The Next Chapter Bookstore and Neighbor Dudes Tap House are partnering for a Holiday Boozy Book Fair on Dec 9. The event is at the tap house, so for age 21 and older, but features store selections from The Next Chapter.

“It’s basically a scholastic book fair for adults,” Alexis McCarthy said. “We set it up just like the book fairs you grew up with except there’s beer and you have your own money.”

McCarthy, the co-owner of The Next Chapter Bookstore, said they heard about the idea of a boozy book fair from other booksellers who had a lot of success with the event.

“It’s an idea that has come up within the last couple years, and we thought it would do really well here,” she said. “We did the first one in September, and it was a smash hit, so we’ll be back on location at Neighbor Dudes.”

This time, the book fair will have a few holiday twists.

“We’ll have some more Christmas-y reads, but we’ll really focus on holiday gift buying,” McCarthy said.

The book fair will feature holiday reads, bestselling books and new releases in addition to bookish gifts, puzzles and board games. There will not be fuzzy pencils or large posters, but there will be items to excite anyone who remembers a school book fair.

“Unfortunately, I have no posters of porpoises with inspirational sayings, which was my favorite part of the book fair as a kid, but we have a lot of great accessories like book holders, pretty journals, all that fun extra stuff,” McCarthy said.

In the board game selection, McCarthy said they will have games for purchase as gifts, as well as some smaller games that people can buy and play right there at the tap house.

McCarthy said they are looking forward to bringing the event back.

“It went really well last time and we’re really excited to do this again,” she said. “Bring your wallet, bring your ID, and bring some friends.”
