Registration is open for a class to make moccasins at Painted Sky Center for the Arts. Class begins Jan. 9.

JOHN DAY — Painted Sky Center for the Arts is settled into a new location in John Day, and the roster of classes and activities continues to grow.

Find the center at 116 NW Bridge St., and register for classes online at paintedskycenter.com.

This week brings the monthly third Thursday meetup for artists, which is a chance for artists of all mediums to share ideas, collaborate and meet other artists. The gathering begins at 5:30 p.m. Although attendance is free, registration is requested.

“Collaborate with other creative-minded people,” said Valerie Munyon, Painted Sky’s executive director. “It’s a fun evening of creative energy.”

Another monthly offering is a writer’s workshop, which meets on the first and third Tuesday of each month from 6-8:30 p.m. Attendees are asked to register for this free workshop, and can come to any sessions. The goal is to provide a place to share written work and develop skills. The next gathering is Jan. 2.

Classes

Although many classes have sparked interest, Munyon said several were canceled due to a lack of registration.

“If you see something, sign up for it — it might not be offered again,” she said.

When perusing the class calendar online, each listing details how much space is left in the class. If the minimum is not met, Munyon said the class may not happen.

Also, she encourages the community to consider a membership, which starts at $50 per year for an individual. Members receive 10% off class prices, plus attendance to member-only events, use of the center’s board room, and the perk of checking books out of the art library.

Painted Sky currently has a membership drive with the goal of 50 new members in 50 days.

“We’re halfway there,” Munyon said.

Here’s a look at what’s coming up at the art center:

  • Adult Moccasins: Four sessions on Tuesdays starting Jan. 9, 5-7 p.m. Register early so the instructor knows the needed shoe sizes. Cost is $157.50 members, $175 nonmembers.

After school and Friday art club

Another offering is an art club that runs after school and on Fridays. Parents can choose from three options: after school until 5 p.m. plus Friday morning from 9 a.m. to noon; Friday morning only; or only after school Monday through Thursday.

“Our after school kids program is amazing,” Munyon said. Participants work on weeklong art projects in many different mediums. The program continues until June, and Munyon said two partial scholarships are available.

The cost varies by program choice. For details, visit paintedskycenter.com or call 541-575-1335.
