Christmas Bird Count is Dec. 21

CANYON CITY — The Grant County Bird Club invites area residents to join the National Audubon Society’s Christmas Bird Count, the world’s longest-running community science survey.

The goal is to count all the birds within a 15-mile-diameter circle. Groups divide the circle into smaller areas, and people can participate from home by tallying visitors to their bird feeders. Local data is sent to the National Audubon Society to be compiled into a comprehensive snapshot of bird populations during the winter months.

Interested birders can meet at 7 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 21, at the Squeeze-In Restaurant, 295 S. Canyon Blvd. in Canyon City. Over breakfast, Grant County bird count compiler Tom Winters will designate teams and assign territories. At 5 p.m., birders will gather at 1188 Brewing Co., 141 E. Main St. in John Day, to submit their results. Feeder watchers and other interested parties are invited to join them.
