PENDLETON — The Oregon East Symphony Youth Orchestra will present a free winter concert on Thursday, Jan. 25, 7 p.m. at the Vert Club Room, 345 SW Fourth St.

They will be joined by the beginner level Preludes Orchestra. The concert will be followed by a reception with punch and cookies.

The intermediate level OES Youth Orchestra, under the direction of OES Assistant Conductor Zach Banks, will perform arrangements of Florence Price’s “Adoration,” Benjamin Britten’s “Simple Symphony,” Tchaikovsky’s “Swan Lake” and Dvorak’s “Carnival Overture.”

The beginner level Preludes Orchestra, under the direction of OES Assistant Concertmaster Viet Block with assistance from Emma Norquist, will perform “Petite Tango” by C.B. Kriechbaum Jr., “Abendsegen” from Hansel & Gretel by Engelbert Humperdinck, and “Sword Dance” by Thoinot Arbeau.

According to J.D. Kindle, OES executive director, the OES Youth Orchestra’s Winter Concert is made possible with the support of Trendsitions, an organization dedicated to helping those with intellectual, developmental and physical disabilities by providing them with employment path services, day services and community living supports.

Both the OES Youth Orchestra and Preludes Orchestra are activities within Playing For Keeps, the symphony’s classical music initiative for rural youths. The OES Youth Orchestra and Preludes are open to string instrument playing students (violin, viola, cello, double bass) who can play their instrument and read music at an elementary level.

Students audition to determine placement in one of the ensembles. Both ensembles are accepting new students for the spring concert rehearsal series, which begins Feb. 5. Rehearsals take place at the Pendleton High School Music Department on Mondays at 6:30 p.m.
