BAKER CITY — Head to town on Friday, Feb. 2, to see the new art shows unveiled at galleries and shops for the monthly First Friday art walk, 5-8 p.m.

Crossroads Carnegie Art Center

2020 Auburn Ave.

Crossroads will open February’s show “Crafted Horizons: Exploring Nature Through Wood and Lens” featuring local artists David Mespelt (wood sculpture) and Caleb Colton (photographer).

The opening reception starts at 5 p.m., with an artist talk at 5:30 p.m. The exhibit will be on display through Feb. 24.

A native of North Powder, Colton is the fourth generation to grow up on his family’s cattle ranch. His images are often sweeping landscapes of Eastern Oregon.

“I am captivated by the raw and untamed beauty that surrounds me, using my camera as a creative tool to capture the unique character and essence of the rugged and awe-inspiring landscapes I have been fortunate enough to visit,” he said.

A Baker City native, Mespelt has been woodworking for 52 years and was mostly self-taught after taking woodshop classes in Baker middle and high schools.

“Most of the time, I like to make something just out of my head with no plans,” he said. “I’ll have an idea, but the wood can change halfway through.”

He prefers clear finishes to show the wood beneath.

“The finished pieces have a shape, but the wood is what makes it beautiful,” he said.
