Lizzie No tours into Baker City

BAKER CITY — Lizzie No hasn’t ever been to Baker City, but she has a connection just the same.

She grew up in New Jersey.

“Another state where you don’t pump your gas,” she says with a laugh.

(For many years Oregon and New Jersey were the only states that didn’t allow self-service gas stations. Now, self-serve gas is allowed in select Oregon counties, including Baker.)

Music, she said, has always been part of her life — singing, violin and harp.

“I’ve been playing music forever,” she said.

From New Jersey, she headed west to study literature and political science at Stanford University.

But songwriting called.

“You get the bug — I couldn’t help writing songs,” she said.

Her first tour was in 2015, and she “quit her day job” in 2019.

She kept writing through the pandemic, even though any performances moved to an online format.

“I wrote a lot of songs — different types than I’ve written before,” she said.

She continued to perform but through a virtual livestream.

“If I never did another livestream again, it would be too soon,” she said with a laugh.

She performed as a solo act in New York, and recently moved to Nashville.

“Nashville is a great city to be a musician,” she said. “People are so friendly.”

Her third album, titled “Halfsies,” released Jan. 19 and now she’s touring the country to share her music.

“We’re going to be playing a lot of new songs,” she said.

She’ll be at Churchill School, 3451 Broadway St. in Baker City, on Saturday, Feb. 10. Doors open at 6 p.m., and the show starts at 6:30 p.m. with opening act Kasey Anderson.

Tickets are $18 in advance at churchillbaker.com or $22 at the door.

Prior to the West Coast part of her tour, Lizzie No had shows scheduled in New England, Sweden, the UK and then the Midwest.

As for her name?

“Sassy inner child — being told ‘no’ and do it anyway,” she said.

She released “Hard Won” in 2017, followed by “Vanity” in 2019.
