What We’re Into

Recently, I came across a quote from Jason Momoa that stated, “I’m one of those freaky people that actually reads books.”
Strangely, that is the same thing my wife and I say to others about reading. The more I thought about Jason’s quote I wondered, am I that “freaky” because I read books with words on pages that I have to turn?
Well, let’s briefly look at this enterprise. For me to enjoy a book properly, I like to be comfortable. I can accomplish this either in bed, with my upper body elevated about 45 degrees or sitting on my loveseat with snacks and soda at hand. I like to have good lighting, too, so I don’t strain my eyeballs. I would like to insert a caveat here; if the book I’m reading is a good one, I can simply forgo any of the above niceties.
Reading a book gives me a sense of satisfaction through holding the book, turning the pages, dog-earring them to mark my place and finally a feeling of accomplishment by finishing it.
I must confess that I haven’t always been a reader, and for that I have to thank the United States Navy and my having to serve on an aircraft carrier. Waiting in line for almost everything was how it was and to pass the time I would pull out a good paperback.
Yes, I guess I am one of those freaky people.
