PENDLETON — When a mother and daughter magically swap bodies, it leads to a “freaky” Friday of hijinks and understanding. The familiar story comes to life on stage on the stage this month in Pendleton with a new musical twist and high energy.
College Community Theatre is opening its winter show “Freaky Friday: A New Musical” on Feb. 15. The stage musical follows the same basic plot audiences know from the 1972 novel or the movies from 1996 (starring Jodie Foster and Barbara Harris) or 2003 (starring Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis) with a few new twists and great music.
In the stage musical of “Freaky Friday,” businesswoman Katherine Blake (Cheryl Carlson) does not see eye to eye with her teenage daughter, Ellie (Jenna Welch).
In the play, Katherine is juggling a catering business, planning (and catering) her own wedding (which is the next day) and raising two children.
Ellie is trying to navigate school, responsibilities and changing family dynamics. After a fight and a fervent wish the other could know what their life is like, the two switch places with Katherine in Ellie’s body and Ellie in Katherine’s.
For the actresses, that means a lot of coordination and understanding. Both Carlson and Welch have spent a lot of time together over the past few months trying to master the switch.
“We’ve had to spend some time practicing and perfecting each hand movement we do just because we want the characters to reflect them being younger or older,” Welch said. “We have spent a decent chunk of time number one getting to know each other, and two figuring out how we can play each other.”
That work will translate to some hilarious moments on stage when they take on each other’s roles. In addition to mastering the art of the switch, the actresses — and the entire cast — are also learning high energy songs and choreography.
Carlson said the first thing she did when CCT announced auditions was listen to the music.
“Everyone in the world knows the plot of the story, but I had never heard the music for the musical. The music sounded fun, and I thought I would try out, and here we are,” she said.
Welch said the music in “Freaky Friday” is a nice change for people who are only familiar with the more classic musicals.
“It’s a different story and it’s fun music that I think is a little more relevant,” Welch said. “While it’s fun to do these other musicals like ‘Annie’ and ‘The Wizard of Oz,’ it’s fun to do something new and something that people might not recognize as well but will come away really liking.”
Both Carlson and Welch have appeared in multiple CCT performances in the Bob Clapp Theatre.
Carlson’s most recent appearance was as Aunt March in the musical “Little Women” in 2022, and she said her favorite role has been performing in “Nunsense” in 2007. Welch has also been in the CCT spotlight, most notably as the title role of “Annie” in CCT’s 2018 production.
The cast also includes Jason Walker as the fiancé, Mike; Mitchell Fuller as Adam, Ellie’s love interest; Karen Sue Smith as Torrey, Katherine’s assistant; Freddie Schreier as mean girl Savannah; Matthew Welch as Fletcher, Ellie’s younger brother (yes, they are really brother and sister); and multiple teachers, staff, and fellow students that live in the Blakes’ world.
“It’s a lot of fun,” Carlson said. “It’ll be a blast.”
