Call to artists for ‘Common Ground’ show

JOSEPH — An art show inspired by Winter Fishtrap is coming to the Josephy Center for Arts and Culture.

Artists are invited to submit entries for “Common Ground: The Art of Balance and Contrast.”

Submissions are due by midnight on March 21.

In January, the Winter Fishtrap session explored the topic of “Can We Talk?” Discussions covered questions such as: Can we still have conversation in the time of conflict? What are the differences between dialogue, discussion and debate? How can we learn to see past our divisions and focus on the values we share?

For the Josephy show, artists are encouraged to think about related questions, such as: “It is challenging to have open dialogue if we assume society is polarized beyond return. Has it always been this way? Are our differences as deep as we imagine? How will we make the world a better place if we don’t work to find common ground? How can art-making help us and heal us as we engage in the process?”

“Common Ground: The Art of Balance and Contrast” seeks original visual art submissions that engage the theme and these questions. Works may directly address/interpret specific conflicts/resolutions from current or past experience, or they may instead offer more open-ended possibilities for achieving visual, physical, and/or mental balance.

Collaborative works between artists who may work in different media are encouraged for this exhibition. A monetary prize will be awarded for Best Collaborative Work.

All media submissions in abstract and representational works are welcome including 2-D and 3-D works, painting, printmaking, mixed media, photography, book arts, sculpture, etc.

The show will be curated and judged by Kristin Becker, an artist, teacher and mother living in Moscow, Idaho. She is the curator of education and programs at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art at Washington State University in Pullman, Washington.
