JOSEPH — March is Women’s History Month, and the national theme for 2024 is “Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.”

The Josephy Center for Arts and Culture celebrates this year’s theme with a women’s art exhibition titled “Feminine Visions — Embracing Strength and Adventure.” The exhibit opens with a reception at the center, 403 N. Main St., on Friday, Feb. 23, 7 p.m.

This exhibition will present works by women telling their stories of “extraordinary resilience, creativity, and vision.” These curated works are representative of adventurous women of “indomitable spirit” whose art reveals their courage and resilience.

Musical entertainment for the evening will be provided by Marika Straw and Dani Savage. The talented local duo will present Straw’s skillfully crafted compositions with their richly woven harmonies.

This exhibition is curated and will be judged by local artist, world traveler and nature-lover T. Kashiah Sword. Specializing in whimsically colorful landscapes, Sword’s art “encourages female sexuality and challenges the patriarchy.” Her art has been showcased internationally, including in Idaho, Washington, Oregon and Chicago.

Extra programs

A variety of creative and artistic events will take place, enhancing this year’s exhibition.

  • Feb. 29, 6 p.m.:
    • Screening of the 2019 documentary, “Objector.” The film follows Atalya, an Israeli youth who refuses to serve requisite service in her country’s military. The story — written by Amitai Ben-Abba (born and raised in Jerusalem) and directed by award-winning filmmaker, Molly Stuart — offers “a unique window into the Israeli-Palestinian conflict from the perspective of a young woman who seeks truth and takes a stand for justice.” For information, visit www.objectorfilm.com.
    • March 2, 10 a.m.–12:30 p.m.: “Stitch Meditation Class” with local artisan Susan Pesti-Strobel, who will guide this all-skill-level class in creating textile art using fabric and simple, meditative stitches. Supplies are provided. Space is limited. Class cost is $20 and pre-registration is required. Contact the center to register, 541-432-0505.
    • March 3, 2 p.m.:

      • Tuesday Talks:
        • The Center’s Tuesday Talks series continues through April 2 featuring women sharing visions of strength and adventure. Scheduled talks are March 5 with Nora Hawkins on Antarctica and March 19 with Robin Pace on whitewater rafting. Both start at noon. More info at josephy.org.
