- Tylor and the Train Robbers play Thursday, Jan. 16, at HQ in La Grande.
LA GRANDE — Tylor and the Train Robbers are set to release a new album in May, and those who come to their show on Feb. 24 in La Grande will get a preview of the new tunes.
“We’ll be throwing a few new ones in the set,” said Tylor Ketchum, frontman for the band.
He’s joined by his brothers, Jason Bushman (bass) and Tommy Bushman (drums), as well as Rider Soran on steel guitar and new member Antonio Vazquez on lead guitar.
They’ll play Saturday, Feb. 24, at HQ, 112 Depot St. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the music starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15 at lagrandehq.com/tickets.
The brothers grew up in Helix. Tylor started playing guitar around age 13 and formed a band with friends.
“Shortly after my brothers got instruments too and we started playing together to kill time,” Ketchum said.
He moved to Boise, and his brothers followed after graduation. He founded Tylor and the Train Robbers in 2014.
As for the band name? It was a quick decision right before a show.
“I had to have a band name for the marquee. It kind of stuck,” he said.
It’s based on family lore — his dad and grandpa always said he was related to Black Jack Ketchum, a train robber in the late 1800s.
While he hasn’t found a solid connection yet, Ketchum plans to do more research the next time the band tours through Clayton, New Mexico, which is where the robber was found guilty and sentenced to death by hanging.
He even wrote a song about the tale titled “The Ballad of Black Jack Ketchum.”
New album
The band’s newest album, “Hum of the Road,” comes out in early May, and they’ll release a few singles leading up to the debut. “I Ain’t the Only One” is out now, along with a music video — check it out at tylorandthetrainrobbers.com.
They tour year-round — winter finds them closer to home around the Pacific Northwest states, and summer brings longer tours. This summer, Ketchum said they will head to South Dakota and the East Coast.
“Our plans are to get to a lot of new places this year,” he said.
But they’ll play some familiar places too, including Wheatstock Music Festival on Aug. 17 in their hometown of Helix.
“Show the local crowd what we’ve been up to,” Ketchum said.
