- Artists in Oregon, Washington and Idaho are invited to submit work for “Westward,” a show that opens Memorial Day weekend at the National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center.
BAKER CITY — After a multi-year closure, the National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center reopens on Memorial Day weekend in May, and an art show will open at the same time in the Flagstaff Gallery.
Artists are invited to submit works for “Westward.”
Artwork should be representative of Eastern Oregon — a historical representation of the area, landscapes or abstracts.
The theme is inspired by Gary Ernest Smith’s show “Towards Home,” which opens the same weekend at Crossroads Carnegie Art Center in Baker City.
Works can include historical paintings, landscapes, figurative work, abstracts, sculptures, textiles or pottery created in Oregon, Washington or Idaho.
Submit original artwork to Caroline Chalmers at cechalmers@gmail.com. Artists can send up to five images with title, size, medium, artist statement and biography or resume. All mediums are welcome.
Artwork must be submitted by April 12 and delivered to the Interpretive Center, 22267 Highway 86 (five miles east of Baker City) by April 26. Work must be framed and ready to hang with D rings and wires.
The show will be on display from May 24 to July 21.
For information, email Chalmers or call 503-869-0383.
Art center connection
Crossroads Carnegie Art Center has partnered with the Interpretive Center and the BLM to run a gift shop at the center called the Lone Pine Mercantile. Chalmers is the store manager and plans to stock the space with local and handmade items, as well as food prepared by Baker City eateries.
Also, as part of the partnership, Crossroads will jury one show annually at the Interpretive Center from mid-November through February. Since the center is five miles outside of Baker City, the shows will not be part of the First Friday art walk but will have an opening celebration at a different time.
Shows in the Flagstaff Gallery will be included in Crossroads’ annual call for featured artists. Also, art in the gallery, at the artists’ discretion, will be for sale through the Lone Pine Mercantile.
