- The Milton-Freewater Neighborhood Senior Center offers lunch every Friday, plus special events throughout the month.
MILTON-FREEWATER — Community members gather often at the Milton-Freewater Neighborhood Senior Center where those 55 years and up can join the group for an annual membership of just $10 and enjoy many events.
Lunch is served for senior citizens every Friday at noon for $5. Fridays are a busy day — after lunch, bingo starts at 1 p.m. and the evening features pinochle at 6:30 p.m.
Every Monday members meet at 11 a.m. for the Exercise Club. “It’s a 45-minute workout,” said exercise coordinator Jacque Fox.
Some sit in chairs to do exercises while others stand.
“We do a head-to-toe strength and balancing workout with some low-impact aerobics,” she said. “Actually, it’s designed so that each individual can go as slowly or as quickly as they choose.”
The group has an arts and crafts activity once a month, along with a monthly music jamboree held on a Saturday. They hold various events throughout the year and on certain holidays. A community favorite is their annual homemade cookie and candy fundraiser held in the first part of December.
Senior Center President Phil Myers said that they are always looking for volunteers to help with the Meals On Wheels Delivery program and other projects the members do. Members said that even a couple of hours a month would be a huge help. For details about volunteering, email Fox at jbarthelfox@gmail.com.
Right now, members are busy lining up their events, and issue a monthly newsletter to keep members informed of upcoming events.
Their biggest fundraiser, a rib feed dinner, is set for Saturday, April 13. There are two meal times: 4:30 p.m. or 6 p.m. Advance tickets cost $12 and are available at the senior center’s Friday meals. Tickets at the door cost $15.
The center’s mission statement is: “The Milton-Freewater Neighborhood Senior Center is a central meeting place to address the needs of local senior citizens, providing space for meals, socializing, and programs to help all senior citizens in our rural area.”
Located at 311 N. Main St., the building has quite a history in the town. It was originally the Milton Train Depot which was kept busy with trains transporting local produce and various products to other areas.
