BAKER CITY — It’s been just about two years but Hillstomp is heading back to Churchill School.

The duo of Henry Kammerer and John Johnson formed Hillstomp in 2001 and have performed ever since. They live in Portland, and these days play four to six times a month.

“And having a great time,” Kammerer said. “We still love doing it, and that’s all that matters.”

Hillstomp plays Saturday, April 13 at Churchill, 3451 Broadway St. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 6:45 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance at eventbrite.com or $20 at the door. Admission is free for ages 15 and younger who attend with a paid adult.

Although they’ve aged over the two decades of playing as Hillstomp, Kammerer said the years melt away when they step on stage.

“On the way to the show, I feel every one of my 50 years,” he said. “The second that first downbeat hits, I’m 27. And 27 for 90 minutes.”

“As soon as it’s done, I’m 50 years old again.”

Their sound is described as hill country blues with the sound of the 1950s. Kammerer plays guitar and banjo, and Johnson plays the drums.

They’ve been to Europe and played in 38 states at festivals, barns, churches, basements, bars and other venues. But, he said, the best shows are all ages when their kids can be in the audience.

They mostly play in Oregon and Washington.

“It’s where we’re the best known and have the best shows,” Kammerer said.

He said they’re overdue for a new record, which he said will be their best one yet, and do have a music video posted on their website, hillstomp.com. Their music can be found on most streaming platforms.

But if someone wants a sneak peek of their show, he suggests searching on YouTube for clips of live performances to see the energy they bring to the stage.

“We’ve always been a live band,” he said.
