PENDLETON — Last week, singer Alex Sharpe was home in Dublin, Ireland. This week, she’ll perform two concerts at The Vert in Pendleton with a mix of traditional Irish to modern songs.

“It’s a lot of fun, it’s a very fun show,” Sharpe said in a phone interview from Ireland. “There’s a lot of banter, there’s a lot of interaction with the audience. We get them to learn a little Irish, we get them to sing and to dance.”

Sharpe will perform Friday and Saturday, April 26 and 27, at 6 p.m. both nights at The Vert, 480 SW Dorion Ave. Tickets range from $25 to $45 and are available at www.tickettailor.com/events/alexsharpe1/1193981.

A former member of the well-known, all-female Irish musical ensemble Celtic Woman, Sharpe has been a professional performer since the age of 19, when she was cast as Dorothy in a touring production of “The Wizard of Oz.”

She spent her early career in musical theater in London and Dublin, including as Eponine in “Les Miserables” and originating the role of Bernadette in Andrew Lloyd Weber’s “The Beautiful Game.” Sharpe was invited to join Celtic Woman in 2008.

Touring with Celtic Woman allowed Sharpe to visit the United States and start making connections in this country. Celtic Woman primarily tours in larger cities, however, so most of the stops on Sharpe’s current tour are in smaller venues, like Pendleton, where she can interact with the audience.

“Irish people, we love to have the craic. We love bantering with people, we love to joke around, to tell a story to the audience,” she said. “There’s a shared connection to explore through music. Everywhere I end up, there are always people with a connection to Ireland. It blows my mind how small the world is.”

This current tour is an opportunity for Sharpe to create a show that highlights all the sides to her personality. The concert will include songs fans may recognize from Celtic Woman but also John Denver and Fleetwood Mac.

Sharpe has added her own spin to well-known songs, such as an up-tempo arrangement of Cher’s “Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves” or a performance of The Beatles’ “Blackbird” in Irish.

“This is the first time I’ve been able to put together a show with all the music I love to sing,” she said. “There is something for everybody.”

Sharpe will be joined on stage by a seven-member live band. She said anyone considering attending one of the concerts should come out, even if they are not yet a fan of Irish music.

“Come out to party,” Sharpe said. “Come wanting to have fun. The magic isn’t there without an audience.”

“This is the first time I’ve been able to put together a show with all the music I love to sing. There is something for everybody.”
