Spring Run Off raises money for Cove students
COVE — The Cove Education Foundation is hosting a Spring Run Off fun run on Saturday, April 27, to raise money to support Cove students. The nonprofit foundation provides scholarships to Cove High School graduates, as well as small grants for classroom enhancements and curriculum enrichment.
Participants can choose a 5K or one-mile course that goes through the Umatilla Loop of the Tish Croom Nature Trail. Entry is $30.
The run begins at 10 a.m. at the Ascension School Camp and Conference Center in Cove.
Baker Community Choir plans concerts
BAKER CITY — The Baker Community Choir will present its spring program at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 27 and 3 p.m. Sunday, April 28 in the ballroom of the Baker Heritage Museum, 2480 Grove St. Donations are accepted at the door.
The program includes patriotic, Americana and folk music. Veterans are cordially invited to stand for the song of their branch during the musical salute to the armed forces.
Orchestra concert set for April 25
BAKER CITY — The Baker Community Orchestra will hold its spring concert on Thursday, April 25, 7 p.m. in the auditorium of Baker High School, 2500 E St. There is no admission charge and all are welcome.
The concert will honor the re-opening of the National Historic Trail Interpretive Center with music celebrating our pioneer heritage and the west. Included is a piece based upon “Oh Susanna,” another featuring the Kentucky Traveler, and a piece titled “Forgotten Tales of the West.”
The Baker Community Band, under the direction of Russ Carpenter, is made up of volunteer community members. The primary mission of the orchestra is to provide an opportunity to make and enjoy instrumental music. The band is open to any community member who can play a band or orchestra instrument, read music and play, or learn to play, at a high school level.

Tylor and the Train Robbers return to HQ
LA GRANDE — Tylor and the Train Robbers are returning to La Grande for a concert on Saturday, April 27 at HQ, 112 Depot St.
Doors open at 7 p.m. and the music starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15 and available at lagrandehq.com/events.
Tylor and the Train Robbers have been “blazing trails, carving a path through the heartland with their roots country and Americana music” for about a decade.
Brothers Tylor Ketchum, Jason Bushman and Tommy Bushman form the core of this musical powerhouse. Tylor, the eldest, takes the reins as the band’s frontman, rhythm guitarist and songwriter.
Jason, on bass and backup harmonies, and Tommy, on drums and vocals, provide the steady heartbeat and backbone that defines the band’s signature sound. Completing the quartet is Rider Soran, who plays lead guitar, pedal steel and lap steel.
Monthly dance is April 27 in La Grande
LA GRANDE — The BlueMountaineers monthly dance is Saturday, April 27, 6-9 p.m. at the Union County Senior Center, 1504 N. Albany St.
Admission is $5 or free for ages 12 and younger.
The evening includes a finger food potluck.
La Grande High presents play this weekend
LA GRANDE — La Grande High School, along with La Grande Parks and Recreation, will present the play “Out of the Frying Pan,” a classic comedy by Francis Swann, on April 26 and April 27.
An open house begins at 6:30 p.m. each night, followed by the play at 7 p.m. in the LHS auditorium. Tickets are available at the door and cost $5 per person or $15 per family.
It is directed by Robert Gould and McKayla Rollins.
Catch a concert and support the farmers market
BAKER CITY — Goodbye Viking is wrapping up a short tour in Baker City with a show on Friday, April 26, at Churchill School, and the evening is also a fundraiser for the Baker City Farmers Market.
Doors open at 6 p.m. at Churchill, 3451 Broadway St. Tickets are $10 in advance at eventbrite.com or $15 at the door. Admission is free for ages 15 and younger who attend with a paid adult. Food and beverages will be available to purchase.
All sales of Pallet Jack, a craft beer brewed by Barley Brown’s, will support the market. Also, T-shirts will be sold and attendees can bid on silent auction items.
Megan Foucht, market board chair, said the fundraiser helps the market pay musicians and staff, as well as fund programs.
It’s been several years since the market had a musical fundraiser, which was called “Turnip the Beet.”
“We’re really grateful for the generosity of Churchill and their partnership for putting this fundraiser together,” she said. “We’re looking forward to gathering with the community.”
A market information session will be held at 5 p.m., before the show, and vendors will have free admission to the concert.
The farmers market opens June 6 and will be held on Thursdays, from 4-7 p.m. in Central Park, through Oct. 10. The daily vendor fee is $25, and the seasonal fee is $340. For information, visit bakercityfarmersmarket.com.

Youths soar during Young Eagles Day
EASTERN OREGON/WASHINGTON — Youths ages 8-17 are invited to take flight during 2024 Young Eagles Day events throughout the region.
Pilots associated with Experimental Aircraft Association chapters volunteer their time and equipment to make the events possible. The flights, which are approximately 15-20 minutes, are free.
In addition to the flights, several of the venues feature static airplane displays and other activities during Young Eagles Day. Because of the popularity of the events, advanced registration is recommended via www.youngeaglesday.org.

The Young Eagles program was launched in 1992 to help introduce children and youths to the world of aviation. Since its inception, more than 2.3 million young people have participated in free introductory flights.
Tele-Poem celebrates National Poetry Month
LA GRANDE — In celebration of National Poetry Month, Oregon Poet Laureate Anis Mojgani has brought back the “Tele-Poem Telephone Line.” Each day through April 30, anyone can call 503-928-7008 to hear a different poem from Anis, who has presented at Art Center East in La Grande, and other Oregon poets.

Knitting workshop planned in Joseph
JOSEPH — A two-day family workshop titled “Mother’s Day Knitting” is planned for May 11 and May 18, 1-2:30 p.m., at the Josephy Center for Arts and Culture, 403 N. Main St.
Cost is $50 for one child and one adult. Rachel Sterry teaches the workshop and covers needle technique, casting on and off, and pattern reading. Beginners are welcome.

BAKER CITY — A presentation about the Burns Paiute Tribe’s legacy in Baker County is set for Wednesday, April 24, 10 a.m. to noon at Baker Heritage Museum, 2480 Grove St.

Join the 2024 Wagon Train
PENDLETON — This year’s Pendleton Round-Up Wagon Train will be June 24-29. This yearly event lets participants experience the scenery of Eastern Oregon’s Blue Mountains while reliving the journey of the pioneers who forged the Oregon Trail.
Included in the registration fee will be dinner Monday through breakfast Saturday, hay and water (water is likely from a pond or stream) for your animals and beverages. Porta-Potties will be on site and garbage bags will be provided. Showers are available for an additional fee paid in cash directly to the supplier on site.
This is the 43rd anniversary of the Wagon Train event. Authentic western wagons of various types are pulled by workhorses and mules. Friendly teamsters will be hosts on the trail, and the week features food, cowboy poetry, an auction fundraiser, camp activities for all ages, a live band on Friday, and daily drawings for prizes.

Monthly contra dance is April 30 in Walla Walla
WALLA WALLA — The Walla Walla Friends of Acoustic Music is moving the May dance up a week, to Tuesday, April 30 from 7-9 p.m. in the Reid Center Ballroom at Whitman College, 280 Boyer Ave. The dance is also sponsored by the Whitman College Contra/Folk Dancing Club.
The evening features live music by “Big Joe.” Dances will be called and taught by Arielle Cooley and other local callers.

Shred Day event planned April 26
BAKER CITY — Soroptimist International of Baker County is organizing a free community Shred Day event on Friday, April 26, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Umpqua Bank, 1990 Washington Ave. This is a chance to shred any unwanted documents that have personal information. Donations will benefit Soroptimist programs.
Spring showcase coming April 26-27
JOHN DAY — The Grant County Farmers Market spring showcase is happening April 26-27 at the Grant County Fairgrounds pavilion. Tables will be provided and cost $30 for an eight-foot table, or $50 for a 10-foot table.
The showcase hours will be 3-8 p.m. on Friday, April 26, and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 27. Set up begins at noon on Friday.

Clay Walker to headline Round-Up concert
PENDLETON — Country star Clay Walker is the headliner for the Pendleton Round-Up and Happy Canyon Kick-Off Concert. The show, which also features special guest Eddie Montgomery, is Sept. 7, 7 p.m. at Happy Canyon Arena.
Racking up numerous smash hits in the 1990s — including “What’s It to You,” “Live Until I Die,” and “Rumor Has It” — Walker is making a resurgence with his 11th studio album, “Texas to Tennessee.” Released in July 2021, it includes the hot single “Need a Bar Sometimes.”
Montgomery, who performed traditional country/southern rock as Montgomery Gentry until Troy Gentry’s death in September 2017, climbed back in the saddle, releasing his debut solo album, “Ain’t No Closing Me Down, in 2022. It includes a poignant song, “Alive and Well,” that touches on the loss of his two sons and Gentry.
